I read the highlights in a news article and I thought it was a well articulated speech, but it just is so painful to see the world fracturing as it is. For all their flaws, the world was better when the west could reasonably count on each other and the biggest scandal was Monica Lewinsky.

The speech is about a repudiation of power being used to coerce and take, and a recognition that the old structures that created those powers are not something to strive or long for.

Well, I hope on reflection, from the year 2026, we can all agree the the transition to an economic order that created the conditions for right-wing populism to thrive probably should've been more of a scandal than it was...
You get what I'm trying to say on both points though. You don't have to long for something to lament its passing as an individual and recognizing and acknowledging that painful truth, but I also understand why Carney said he didn't want to sit around mourning it. Canada needs to move on.

There isn't much any of us can do about it. He's the president, and he has a platform to speak on. The position of president is not a dictatorship - shouldn't he have people around him stopping him, or saying in his ear "mate, you can't say that?"
The whole speech reminded me of the attached! He:
Called out Somalis, calling them people of low IQ
Contstantly mixed up Iceland and Greenland, saying Iceland call him Daddy
Says the biggest threat to america is not Russia, or china - but NATO
Wants to protect the world from Putin but wants to invite him to his special peace club
Calling Denmark ungrateful for not letting him keep Greenland after WW2

Echoing what rdowall said, I still think the best response would be to stop showing his clips and his comments. Why give him a platform? All of the late night shows and pundits love to joke and laugh, but the person IS a joke. There is no satire or triumphant take down to be found when you're joking about a joke. All they are doing is feeding into his insatiable ego (and the ignorance of his supporters). Ignore completely, global blackout, I'd be curious to see that affect.

Let's be honest though. The scandal wasn't even about him taking advantage of a staffer....he got impeached for lying to congress about cheating on his wife. They didn't give a rats ass about Lewinsky.

This jackass kept calling Greenland Iceland, blamed Norway for not getting a Nobel prize and said that NATO has done nothing for the US - when in reality one of the only tangible things NATO has done was join them in Afghanistan.
No one calls him out on his bullshit ever.

It's hard for me to imagine how this stops. I saw today that Trump's approval rating is in the low 30s and so, yeah, midterms, again -- we've been doing that for a couples decades now -- but it sure is starting to feel like the increasingly extreme and dangerous behavior, domestically and internationally, of the US's right-wing administrations might've reached escape velocity.

Low 30s is literally the Republican/MAGA base. 30% of the country is essentially irredeemable.
The reality is that another 10-20% will sell their neighbour down the river if ti means they get an iota of benefit.
