Max Pacioretty to attend camp, expected to sign deal

And now we wait for the next shoe to drop.

I guess if we can move Jarnkrok/Reaves(unlikely) + Robertson for a two-way 3C with PK, I'm going to be more okay with this.

I guess I am higher on Kampf (two-way 3C) than anyone else.

Why?

Why do they think this is an improvement?  Especially if it means getting rid of Jarnkrok.

Because a healthy Patches can score goals and cost at most 1/2 of Jarnkrok

He isn't healthy.  And now he's being gifted a roster spot.

He was healthy when the playoffs ended, had plenty of time to heal any bumps since then, and isn't being handed anything yet.

Finally got an actual offseason of training instead of rehab, according to Treliving.

"Our expectation is he's going to come in, he gives us more depth. All that stuff's going to sort itself out at camp, right? I know we all get excited when we see guys out here,' Treliving said. "But to me, what we're trying to do is make our roster as deep as possible. I think there's going to be lots of people pushing for jobs. Where everybody fits and who they fit with, Craig (Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube) and the coaching staff will figure it out. I'm just trying to give them as many options as we possibly can. But we're excited to see Max, get him up to speed."

Really. Give the young guys a shot instead of signing these old washed up players. He?s done.

Azzuri you?re back
And right on about Max

I mean, they've tried this several times before with guys who are unquestionably on the downside of their career after injuries and it never really works out well.

Yeah but there?s a big difference between a PTO and a 3 year 18+ million dollar contract.

He is healthy by all accounts I've seen. He isn't being gifted anything.

"He's done"
How do we know that?
He's had serious medical issues with his Achilles tendon and surgeries.
When you reviewed his doctors reports, what did they tell you?
He's done a summer of conditioning - which he didn't get after his 2nd surgery.
He's on a PTO. No risk. They're going to take a look.
I don't see the problem with that.
Maybe it will pan out. Maybe it won't. Training camp should help flush that out.

I looked at his stats. He's still hitting. Still blocking shots. Shot speed is still above average. His above average skating speed slipped to below average but it was a mid season return from a second surgery. It is quite possible after a summer of conditioning that could return/should improve.

An intriguing thing: he's 6'2 217lbs. With Knies and McMann, he would give them a 3rd power forward on the wing if he can still play. Nice to have that in the playoffs.
He's 160th in goals/game in NHL history. If he's able, there is a fair chance he could match Robertson's goal scoring but brings with him a physical, puck battle ability Robertson will never have.

They have some sort of a shot at a player like this on a PTO ... they'd be stupid not to take a good look.

Treliving: Everyone is competing for a job, right? You have to go through camp.[He's not being gifted a spot!]  My expectation is that training camp for young guys is sometimes a little bit different than training camp for veteran guys. {[Except that he's a veteran guy, so yeah maybe I'm gifting him a spot.] My expectation is to see where everything goes. [yadda yadda yadda]

My expectation is that he is going to be with us [gifting yes!], but everyone has to earn their spot here [gifting no!], whether that is on the roster or playing with who. It gives us a lot of different options. [gifting probably]

Ehhhh he's gifting him a spot.  What a bunch of double-talk.

The fact that Patches can basically play on any line if he?s healthy is a huge plus in his favour. He?s responsible defensively, plays physical, can play the net front role, etc. Sure, he?s not the goal scorer he used to be, but he potentially brings enough in other areas that he doesn?t have to be in order to contribute. Even if he doesn?t score at the same rate Robertson might, he makes up for it by not allowing as much back the other way as Robertson would be susceptible to. That absolutely warrants a look, even if it wasn?t for Robertson?s unresolved trade request.

I said in a post earlier today that I would take a guy who scores 12 goals a year over Robertson scoring 20 if that player could play in both ends of the ice, etc.

I had a pretty bad Achilles injury - not completely torn. Reinjured it. But no two surgeries. Took a long time to recover. Never troubled me again. I realize not everyone is that lucky but it is not beyond the realm given mine occurred decades ago before they knew nearly as much as they do now.

You go to war in the playoffs, you need players that can battle in both ends. That's why Robertson is having trouble sticking and seems to be on the outside looking in. It's tough because the guy has worked most of his young life for this and he has some talent. We'll see how it unfolds soon enough.

I have trouble accepting that.

No Cup in Toronto since 1967
Treliving knows that he is only going to get a few kicks at the can - probably not as many as Dubas
Berube, part of the fraternity of NHL coaches with an average tenure of ~2.4 years before firing, knows that too.

They're not going to gift a slug a spot with their jobs on the line.
Pacioretty's past earned him a crack. So did Lorentz.
Waiver exempt players are the only exception to that rule but even then, stashing them in the AHL is to help the NHL team have flexible depth to win at the NHL level.
The only way anyone gets a spot is if he convinces them during training camp that he can help the team win hockey games. A vet like Pacioretty might get a little longer leash but if he's too fragile or broken, they won't sign him.
