I certainly agree that the war was 'ridiculous' (stupid, illegal, evil too). Given that that's the starting point here, I think the terms of the settlement make a lot of sense.

Ultimately this is a kick the nuclear can down the road kind of understanding, except now Iran has control of the strait and I think has not committed to never blocking or charging tolls. Also, it seems like the are unfreezing assets immediately and sanctions pressure goes down. Ultimately this is a pretty bad outcome considering this was a mess of the U.S. own creation.

Six years or so ago, Trump signed CUSMA touting it as the best trade deal ever.
His tariff actions violate it.

US Chamber of Commerce warned that Trump's new tariffs related to this breakdown could cost Americans 13 million jobs.
Something would intervene before they lost all those jobs. But Trump's approval on the economy is 28%. In 6 years, he's racked up more than 25% of the US $40 Trillion debt. If Trump loses the House or Senate in the midterms just 70+ days away, he becomes lame duck. He's also suffering politically from the failed Iran war - and many other issues. The timing of this deal falling apart is bad for him politically. Trump's TACO nickname stands for "Trump Always Chickens Out". I don't think we've heard the last of it in the near future but Carney may sweat him out to help tank Trump's midterm polls - leaving Trump no option but to steal it as they seem to be preparing to do.

It's kinda bugging me how the Canadian media is just going off on the catastrophic job losses. I don't think this will last at all. Then again, I'm no economist.

I mean the Canadian media is US media at this point. Most of the newspapers (and their digital counterparts) are owned by US companies. There is absolutely an anti-Liberal, pro US bias in half of those papers.

We need to wait this nonsense out because any deals with Trump aren't worth the paper they are printed on. We should continue to develop new trade agreements with other nations...and IF and only IF the US comes to their senses, do we reengage in proper trade talks.

This isn't a Trump problem. This is far more a Federalist Society and Heritage Foundation problem and those entities don't go away the second Trump is removed from office/dies. Trump is just the buffoon who makes America look stupid when he speaks. The evil lies with the organizations who have been pushing their agendas for decades to lead to this nonsense.

Personally I've seen most Canadian media say it was a good idea we rejected the deal. I think they have to report the facts they've heard but I don't think anyone is saying we shouldn't have walked away based on the demands they've put on us, especially last minute nonsense.

LK, I think unfortunately you're right. I think Trump is both a cause and a symptom but with everything that's been normalized it'll take bipartisan efforts to really reign the insanity in and I think they're too far gone. Now they all believe their institutions are beyond saving and I see a world where they essentially are ruled by a king, even moreso than they are already instead of doing the hard work of reforming these institutions. All the dead Soviet leaders are having a party in their graves at this point.
