And surely this will be the last we see of Maccelli right? I'd take Jarnkrok any day of the week over the perimeter player Maccelli is. If you want more fire, put players in the line up with more fire. More drive. And play them. Move them up the line up to drive play. If you want to create energy, you have to remove playing time from your energy drainers and put in your spark plugs. That's Robertson, Cowan, Domi(can't believe I said that), Lorentz, Roy, Tavares, Jarnkrok. Right now, for me, every other forward is sucking the energy out of the team. Lack of care. Lack of second effort. Just Lacking. Including Matthews, Knies and Nylander.

Maybe Marner really was the driving force on this team and they let the wrong superstar leave. The Leafs just got out hustled by Shane Wright, Chandler Stevenson, and Jaden Schwartz. That's unacceptable.

Nice post. At the very least, Marner always gave an effort on both sides of the puck.

So which superstar should have left? They all have a history of coming up small when it really matters. I think Marner appeared to care more than Matthews or Nylander, but he didn't seem to be able to handle the pressure of Toronto. Not sure how much of that was due to him being from the area, how much was family-induced, or whatever. But I do think he had to leave for his own sake.

Matthews doesn't seem to have much of a pulse and now he's not really an elite goal scorer anymore either. Nylander - I don't know what to make of him. He seems to find a lot more energy for scoring opportunities than for back checking.

It's just unfortunate that the Leafs "core 4" for all these years has been composed of a players who don't have that extra gear, that willingness to lay it all on the line, go through the wall (or whatever cliche you want). You can't change that DNA by bringing in 8-12 minute role players.

The Leafs have had decent records with Marner and Matthews both out of the lineup.

Season is still very young.
Has Matthews looked like the top 5 NHLer he was? Not to me.

He's racking up pts but let's be clear, he's been MIA in half the games so far, hasn't scored a goal on a goalie and his effort on the defensive side of things is still the same as it was years ago. That's never going to win in the long run.

Me personally would have kept Marner and traded 88 back when Tre took over. They should have changed the "core" when Tre took over from Dubas who was reportedly going to trade 1 of them.

You could try and keep Marner all you want, but it seems absolutely clear to me that he has absolutely no interest in staying here.

So your scenario would have whatever you get for Nylander and no Marner. And I’m pretty sure Nylander has the same no movement clause.
