Sharks @ Leafs - Dec. 11th, 7:00pm - TSN4

I just got to say, Matthews absolutely embarrassed himself in OT. What the hell was that? Worst back check ever... that's our Captain? Yikes.

End of a long shift, so my complaint isn't so much the backcheck, but the decision to try to drive into traffic when there wasn't even a clean lane or scoring opportunity after.

Not even counting all the ones he assisted on. Once Treliving was hired they started using him more in these situations.

Nylander is, maybe counterintuitively, one of the most productive players on the team at 5v6 over the last three seasons. See Natural Stat Trick.

That's great, but do you have statistics of how many times he is on the ice when the Leafs give up a tying goal in those situations? And how it compares to other Leafs? Maybe he is overall doing better than I think he is, but without the data I don't believe it.

And, scoring a goal in those situations is less impactful than giving one up. In the former you basically insure (most of the time) that you win, so you're still getting the 2 points you already should have if you just hold on. But if you give up a goal, especially in a game where you're leading by 1, you probably lose 1 point and maybe 2.

The whole OT they looked tired and indecisive. Whether that is a byproduct of how much they played late in the game or not, I don't know. Would have been the perfect OT to try someone else...

In addition to our #8 defenceman being hurt two of our other most likely call-up options are also out: Rifai and Villeneuve. Organizational defence depth is definitely getting tested.
Yeah this is very fair.

It's not normal to have your #1, #3, #5, #8, #9, #10 defensemen all injured at the same time...and most of them with long-term injuries. We can debate age and durability as guy like Tanev should be expected to miss time. Fluke injuries will happen (like Mermis' jaw last year) but its been a lot of bad luck.

Some of it is having an older roster. Some of it is guys with injury history but this is a big storm of mess.

I guess we still have Bennett and Cade Webber?

Like Carlton mentioned, that was the first tying goal Nylander was on the ice for in 9:25 of 5v6 this season. 4 goals for in return (2 of them his own, primary assists on the other 2). He's usually with Tavares (one time with Matthews) for these situations.

You can toggle for individual performance (instead of on-ice) and different seasons if you want. He was pretty good when given those minutes.

I understand people don't like how he just sort of stands still in the DZ and ascribe it to laziness or some moral failing; he just operates on the understanding that he is paid to drive offense and creating offense requires something in the tank.
