Nick Robertson traded to Pittsburgh

I'm sure Leafs GMs sent out an email more than once to the other GMs
"Nick Robertson available. Anyone interested?"
And the return emails (from those who responded) was probably a 5th to 7th round pick - not very much or he would have been gone. So, the Leafs GMs felt they'd hang on to him. If they got an offer for a 2nd round pick, what GM wouldn't have taken that?

He had some significant injury history during the start of his career
Leafs coaches gave him TOI/game between 13th and 16th among forwards when he played
So the Leafs own coaches were not evaluating him that highly.
How do you persuade another GM to evaluate him highly with a high draft pick when his own coaches were not?
Trading him to the GM who drafted him is probably as good as it was going to get.

A change of scenery. More ice time and PP time playing on a scoring line with offensively skilled players. I think he can produce more offensively if he gets that chance. We'll see how it goes in Pittsburgh and whether that coach tries him in that role.

But for this particular transaction at this moment in time, they probably got all they were going to get with that 4th round pick.

This is a pattern I've noticed over many years on this site: when we get an arguably poor return in a trade, people start claiming the guy was never as good as everybody thought he was. I bet you if we had polled posters on here before this trade and asked them what's the least they'd expect to get for a roster player with scoring mojo like Robertson, it would have been more than a 4th.
I don't completely buy that. The board is not unanimous in belief or degrees of that belief on almost anything. We don't act like a hive mind. I could easily say well actually every time we trade a guy we get outraged that we didn't get enough because we love our guys.

Truthfully though, I thought we'd get a 3rd when his value was higher and even then I would think that was too low for a guy with his promise. It hasn't shaken out that way and he's vocally wanted out for a while. I can see why both parties would want to move on and this was the market price.

Email? in 2026?
Not common but I've seen that mentioned in media coverage.
For example, not that long ago, Freidman mentioned a group email chain to advise of player availability on 32 thoughts.
They change the email address periodically to avoid media.
I've also seen whatsapp, text, and naturally, because they talk frequently, they can do it one on one.
As I understand it, at certain times, when things are crazy like July 1 or deadline day, GMs don't have time to call everyone trying to flip a player for a draft pick. They can't trade him via email but they can line up interested parties in a time efficient way.
