Patrick Kane returns to Blackhawks on two-year deal

The Buffalo, N.Y., native signed a two-year, $16 million contract worth $8 million in average annual value with the Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday, per Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.

That's absolutely crazy. Good for Kane, but man that's a lot of money for a guy two years older than Tavares.

Chicago having enough cap space to spend 8 million dollars on Kane x2 years makes sense. Bedard being done with his rookie contract while still being in a situation where you have the ability to spend 8 million dollars on Kane for 2 years is certainly a choice. I don't think this is a bad decision by Chicago to bring Kane back. He can teach some good skill things to the younger players....but the team should be looking to compete for the playoffs and outside of 2/3 of the Western conference being soft poo over the last year, that Chicago team still looks pretty mediocre.

Patrick Laine? One of the most lethal shots I have ever seen in his prime. Hopefully, a team with a good psychologist and a chill market gets him back to ripping goals.

6.3% of the current cap; raw number feels high, but it's basically a 2C on long term amount.

I could absolutely end up being wrong but I still think Minten got a little overhyped last season and isn't likely to be a true 2C. He had one massive hot streak mostly in January that saw him record 16 points in 15 games (Leafs happened to have a 1-6-2 stretch during that time). But he started the season with 13 points in 40 games and ended the season with 6 points in 27 games. Obviously he was a 21-year old rookie so those numbers are still perfectly fine but I dunno I'm just skeptical about one months performance turning him into a legit future 2C when even before the trade that isn't how a lot of people saw him.

With that said, I guess this still seems like a decent bet. If the elite NHLers are going to be making $20mil then $7mil for a guy who's even lets say a good 3C doesn't seem that much off the scale. But basically everyone who signed big contracts before a month or two ago is going to be a crazy underpaid.
