2025-26 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

Can someone explain to me why they shot Kampf out of a canon? How could he not be useful at this point? I don’t get why Berube dislikes him so much. He’s strong and defensively responsible. Isn’t that what Berube wants?

Kampf didn't want to play for the Marlies.
Kampf walked away from the Marlies.
Kampf asked to be moved.
Leafs tried facilitating a trade.
They couldn't get a trade done.
Kampf and the Leafs mutually agreed to terminate the contract.

The Leafs made their roster choices at the start of the season and Kampf was the odd man out. No doubt that Kampf would be a help right now. I do think Kampf was a bit of numpty to walk away from the Marlies but that's what he wanted to do.

I think it's fair to assume that if Kampf had just stuck it out with the Marlies for another couple of weeks he'd be up with the Leafs right now. So he might have cost himself a decent chunk of change by leaving. Whether that would be a temporary or permanent promotion is obviously anyone's guess though of course.

Leafs clearly didn't want Kampf anymore. Berube played him in 1 game last playoffs.
Start this year, Laughton goes down, nothing....Laughton goes down again, nothing. Now Roy goes down and they need a 3C, Kampf isn't it. I think they're calling up Quillan with both Roy and Matthews out because they need some offense and he is the best option for 3C.
Kampf may have cost himself some cash next year but sitting in the minors with that contract will probably cost him more in the long run. Stay in the minors too long, especially a defense first guy and you get forgotten real fast so he's betting on himself and will be a UFA in a lousy market. Who knows how it'll turn out for him. Hey he made himself an extra 50K this year with his 1.35M signing bonus. Anyway, good luck to him.
