2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

Woll hasn't played in almost 2.5 months.  I would imagine the Leafs want him to get some AHL games in to shake off the rust. 

I would think he would allowed to practice with the AHL team, though he would have to be officially sent down to play in a game.

He can play on a conditioning stint and that's what he's on.  He's officially with the Marlies.

Maybe. He's basically there for up to 5 games (3 as the standard, plus the team's option of requesting 2 more), since it's an LTIR loan. Typically, this type of assignment would be partly to assess if a player is ready to return to action, so, I guess we'll see.

Maybe, but if he wasn?t going to join the team any way, he could have practiced with the Marlies and with some of the training staff that wouldn?t be on the trip without being the loan. Seems like the hope/plan is that he gets into some games.
 
Good to see him get a game. Have to think he's back with the Leafs next week. Maybe a relatively safe first start against Arizona on Thursday.

Man, Woll had to deal with a lot of breakdowns there and a lot of shots....the Marlies really made sure it felt like a Leafs game for him.

There were a number of plays where Woll could have got hurt.


 
Woll looked good in his first conditioning game with the Marlies
Assuming that continues, the trade deadline is a week this Friday, March 8th
By then, there's a decent chance that the Leafs should have 3 healthy goalies.

I do not see any chance of Jones clearing waivers with .907 save%, 2.71 GAA
He's looked pretty good putting up those numbers.
Since Samsonov returned, he's .911 save%, 2.27 GAA over 11 games

I'm almost certain the Leafs will do something at the deadline.

The Athletic recently rated the Leafs prospects 28th out of 32 teams. I'm not convinced that's the bible but it is another reminder that the cupboard is pretty bare and that ignores all the upcoming draft picks that were traded.

I'm wondering if one of these two UFA-to-be goalies should/could be traded by the deadline.
Both won't likely be here next season so we're going to lose one of them anyway.

These two goalies seem like two nice people who have been good teammates. Maybe the return isn't worth it - upsetting the team. I have no idea. I find them both very likeable.

I kicked tires a bit looking for a playoff bubble team that could use a goalie to help secure a playoff berth. I didn't see an obvious one. I was fishing to see if it might be a way to get a dman back.

Maybe someone here has some better ideas or thoughts.
In less than 2 weeks, some sort of a decision is going to be made.
 
I believe the Leafs are thinking it's more important to have Jones around instead of a guy like Gregor or say Lagesson if/when they need to move someone off the roster. They could potentially include Jones in a trade but I think that's unlikely. One good thing about the TD is that rosters size is unlimited. The Leafs right now could have a 25 man roster and still be under the cap with Woll, Jarnkrok and Timmins back.

I think that has already been established with their roster.

The premise of my comments was they're looking to add before the deadline.
If that happens, someone HAS to go.
They might go in the deal. Or there might be two deals - one to get the player addition
and one to make room for that addition.

Assuming Woll is their guy, one of UFAs Samsonov or Jones won't be here next year. A NHL team is likely to give the guy not here a NHL shot.
If they land a top 4 D, Samsonov might be of more interest to move because of his cap hit.
I can't recall anyone winning a Cup with a 3rd string goalie. I don't think parachuting Ken Dryden in is comparable. Hildeby might have a better chance of pulling that off.

For a team short of prospects and picks, I thought it might be a way to help that cause a little. OTH, if all they're going to get is a 7th rounder, that isn't likely to make much of a difference. I thought they might return something a little north of that.
 
With the up and down and up season Samsonov has had, the injury to Woll, I would hang on to Jones.

I just don't think any team is going to pony up much for either Jones or Samsonov to make it worth while.

Friedman last night said Leafs have been shopping for a right shot D-man. 
 
I?d also hold on to Jones, though, since his back to back starts against the Sharks, his numbers are not pretty at all. GAA of 3.69, Sv% of .867.

The more he plays, the more his numbers get closer and closer to those he put up the previous 5 seasons. I really only want to keep him around because I think it?s better to have a veteran 3rd string sitting in the press box/occasionally dressing as the back up than having someone like Hildeby there. I?m still convinced he clears waivers pretty easily, though.

Some pundits seem to think their 1st rounder is gone.  I'm not so sure.

Treliving has to be looking at how much Dubas has already sold off (to little effect). Despite the current hot streak, the defense isn't good enough.  To improve that at the TD, I would be looking at trading Samsonov rather than the 1st rounder.

But I would be happier standing pat than either of those two options.
