I've wondered the same thing.
Another thing I've started to wonder about: Marner was apparently popular in the room. Some of his mates might be ticked off at how that all went down. Or the DNA crack taken as a snipe at their character. I'm not in the room so I have no idea.

He was with Berube in St Louis ...
His PP was 24.8% last year, 13.3% this year.

Well, if one thing has become obvious over the past 10 years, Leaf management is never afraid to make the big move.

Watch, the pp will score a bunch of goals (because, eventually, some of those shots will go in) and it will be "problem solved"

If the players liked Savard they might take it to heart they are the reason he lost his job. Might wake them up a bit.

Small sample size but it was running around 10 percent 15 games into the season last year until they moved to the 5 forward PP and jettisoned Rielly to the moon. Granted we don't have a Marner to man the point but Treliving doing nothing to get any offense from the blue line screams from the rafters

Rielly can't appear on the PP anymore

I wonder if, once they moved to 5 forwards, Marner became the de facto PP coach (more or less implicitly guiding when & what plays to run as when he had possession at the point). People say the loss of Marner's on-ice puck skills has hurt the PP, but perhaps the Leafs lost their actual PP coach when Marner walked and Savard never really did anything to begin with...
