Woll and Benoit traded to Philly

I'm with most. I do not know these players. But feel the Leafs did not get great value in return
Emil Andrae is statistically underwhelming and a RFA with arbitration rights
Samuel Ersson - looks like filler - don't see him helping at the NHL level
3rd round pick - about 15% of those picks go on to a meaningful NHL career
They may wind up with a 7th dman or nothing

On the surface, it isn't a deal I would make.

I would have rather kept Woll over Stolarz ☹️
I've flip-flopped on that constantly. When healthy I prefer Stolarz, I always think back to the last playoffs and how much of a turning point him getting knocked out was. But this past season was such a disappointment with injuries for him it was almost enough to turn the tide. Not like Woll has a sparkling clean injury history either though.

I think the Leafs are stuck with Stolarz (at least for now) 🙁

I do think Stolarz still represents a higher ceiling but last year was very concerning.

Luckily, Carolina just showed us you don't need a good goalie to win the cup. 😃

I think I really like Andrea as an acquisition but it seems like a mediocre overall trade swap. At least he isn't going to a team I hate

32 vs 27, I think Woll can eventually put it together and become a stud. Stolarz is at the age where he's gonna start going downhill in both skill and health.

This. Woll is the goalie I would NOT have traded.

But I guess Chayka is looking to build a team for the next 2 years and Stolarz is their best bet, apparently.

Yuck.

The Leafs are gonna need one of Akhtyamov or Hildeby to play a lot of games. What is the realistic over/under on number of games that Stolarz can play? I'll set the bar at 29.5

This is the problem. Keeping fingers crossed that AA's performance in the playoffs is the real deal because they are going to need him. This Ersson guy sucks.

Overall value is probably fair - Andrae for Benoit, 3rd and Ersson for Woll seems about right - and, likely, neither Woll or Stolarz are the guy for the Leafs long-term. Still, not a trade I would have made, but, I'm going to call it neither a good deal nor a bad deal. Just a meh one.

We were expecting a busy, transformative offseason, so, if this is the start of that, cool, I guess.

I would guess a selling point of acquiring Ersson would be that (assuming he's re-signed) he's not-great (aka bad) enough that he'll likely get through waivers easily at the beginning of the season and be able to serve as a pretty experienced 3rd NHL goalie when injuries inevitably hit.

Woll did not help his trade value at the World Championships
4? starts, ~.780 save percentage, ~3.8GAA - something like that - it was ugly - they parked him

I think the calculus here is that Stolarz would have netted no return and to try to carry that into the season while retaining Woll would eventually lead to the loss of Hildeby.

They could have carried 3 goalies until one of the top 2 gets hurt, which is highly likely. Anyway we'll see how it goes I guess. This is the first domino, there are more trades coming.

He also wasn't great for a good chunk of the season - not that he got any help from the team in front of him. Like I said earlier, I don't think he's ever going to the the guy. He's a solid part of a tandem, but, overall, his numbers are largely pretty average.

I still would have kept him over Stolarz, all else being equal, because of his age and such. But, the Leafs needed to make a move in net eventually, and waiting might have meant they ran out of options. Still lukewarm on the deal, though.

I like Woll, and it's nice to have a drafted goalie who turned into something. But just something about him, I dunno, worried me. Like I feel that he shrinks in big games.

I guess the return reflects what people think he's worth. I just don't see him turning into the next Rask.
