The reality is under the right structure Phanuef is not half as bad he is portrayed to be. Yes under Carlyle and the other "coaches" the Captain was expected to be superman and carry the team on his back. He looked horrid at times and just bad the rest of the time.
Now under Babs we see Phanuef playing in the right context, still making his share of bonehead plays, getting blown by faster younger skaters, perhaps way to much PP time, but overall he has been much steadier. Worth his huge fee? Of course not, but their are teams that could see value in him for their playoff push. Perhaps we take back a bad contract or perhaps we won't have to retain to much of his pay.

The Stars certainly aren't afraid to make big moves. Lehtonen is on the books for 2 more seasons after this one at $5.9mil and their 1a/1b system has become more of a traditional model with Niemi getting the majority of the starts. Maybe something like Phaneuf and Reimer for Lehtonen + something? They can still have their 2-goalie system and they can try to re-sign Reimer to a more reasonable deal than Kari's.

Mr. Fletcher's position on 27 year old players, as well as mine, are fundamentally irrelevant to the Leafs direction, IMHO. But I would suggest that it might be premised on bona fide talent, which of Dion didn't really have over the last 6 years. And how about that Phaneuf trade now!!!!! Yesss!!!
