Sergei Bobrovsky is a Maple Leaf

I think this does really give AA the prime opening to be the goalie of the future. Who would have thought that prior to the Calder?

It's totally up to Bob. He's the HOFer. McKenna should take 12 for now lol. He's going to get a really nice watch for his troubles.

12 is a good compromise. He can jump back to 72 when he signs his second contract after Bob retires with another Cup (let me specify that he wins this Cup with the Leafs).

When they stitch the C to his sweater.

My guess is Bob does the kid a solid and takes 35 instead.

I've definitely always been on team #12 for McKenna, so hopefully this puts that into motion. 27 here is retired, so is 9 (he's worn that with Canada).

Woll and Stolarz could only crease-share to post decent stats and stay healthy. All biases aside, you never knew when Woll physically/mentally would be available. I think the G is definitely in a better spot today, both in reliability and in skill.

At least you know Bob can make starts, which is very much needed. The $7m price tag means the Leafs think he can still be an elite goalie but I think those days are past us.

I was a little shocked to see the Leafs in on Bobrovsky, partly due to his age but mostly due to his atrocious numbers last year. I didn't; however, realize how injury-riddled the Panthers were for most of last season and (as per Noodles via Overdrive) he started games where there were as many as 12 regulars out of the lineup. So maybe we can see a nice bounce back? I'm just happy it wasn't for the reported potential 6-year deal.

I gotta say this signing concerns me. There are basically 2 goalies in NHL history (or at least any recent history) who have ever been above average/good at age 38 or older - Belfour and Hasek, and nobody really in like 20 years. So it makes me think - Bobrovsky is great, but there have been many other great goalies too, and none of them have been able to both handle a starters workload and provide above average goaltending past that age.

So basically feels like we’re hoping that Bobrovsky is one of the 0.01% of goalies ever to do this thing, which feels like the bad sort of bet to make. And that’s without even getting into that we’ve already seen signs of his decline the past two seasons. Father Time is undefeated, so I’m not sure why so many people expect a bounce back.

But Belfour did it with the Leafs! Lightning may strike twice!!! (I actually remember the same concerns were raised when Leafs signed Belfour. He was coming off a really bad year and people thought he was finished)

Belfour is probably my favourite Leaf of my time. Only Leaf player I ever had on a jersey.

I’m going to hope that Bob can finally usurp him.

(Disclaimer: I’m a mad goalies fetishist)

Yup - and he very well might be another exception to the rule! Or might be just like Rinne or Lundqvist or Luongo, all great HHOF goalies who declined into their later 30s and either no longer were the full time starters or became just league average.

I totally agree with your concerns. (I am opposed to this signing). I think the only bright spot for positivity is that Bobrovsky is in that goalie tier, multiple Vezinas, multiple cups, etc. I'd say there is a chance Bob performs well.

It also might be fare to say Leafs management are hoping for league average from Bob but a goalie that will make the starts and bring championship vibes. The Leafs play in their own zone will go a long way in how well Bob plays.
