SCF: Vegas Golden Knights vs. Carolina Hurricanes

As much flack as Toronto gets, Winnipeg's year wasn't much better. President trophy team that flamed out in the playoffs, they let a core member walk away in free agency, they missed the playoffs altogether and are now at a crossroads, and the player they let walk just won a cup with his new team in his first year there.

I’m giving the Jets a standing ovation the next time they’re in town for their contribution to the Cup win. Just a fantastic farm system for developing gamers for big league teams.

TBT to that time Steve Simmons randomly started shouting at Tyler Dellow (now a Stanley Cup winning assistant GM) for thinking he knows more than NHL GMs:

Not exactly groundbreaking news. He has always been fiercely loyal to his family. What did we think he was going to say?

Groundbreaking? Simply (him and Rantanen) maybe made a mistake not going (or staying in Carolina?) Not much more to it. Players spurned Carolina, they won anyway.

It was reported at the time, Marner would have accepted a trade to Vegas... so, maybe a little disingenuous.

I didn't watch a second of the finals but taking a quick look at the stats - Eichel had 0 goals in the finals and 2 overall? This doesn't get any scrutiny? Well I guess that's the advantage of playing in such a hot market where no one gives a shit.

Sorry, not a former Leaf.

Love him, hate him, Vegas didn't lose because of Marner. He had a great playoff run. Just goes to show when the support isn't there, the goals are even harder to come by. Eichel overall had a pretty rough playoffs. I was surprised when I saw he only scored 2 goals. Oh well, feel good for Cassidy who I bet is smiling, probably like most of the coaching fraternity.
I think a lot of people slept on the Canes. They are a well built, well coached team. I don't agree with Staal getting the CS. I think Taylor Hall did more over the entire playoffs then Staal but I'm going to guess nobody really gives a crap. Very happy for Freddie who had a great run until he was injured and having to deal with his friend's death.

I think they definitely weighed the Finals performances significantly higher than any other round here, which makes sense considering there probably wasn't a clear-cut favourite otherwise. Hall had 2 goals and 3 points against Vegas, while Staal had 6 goals and 7 points (Ehlers led the team in scoring in the final round with 9 points).

If they weighed the entire playoffs equally then Freddie arguably deserved it the most, but obviously his injury in the Finals made that a bit awkward. I'm sure Staal and the team recognized that and it played a role in him getting the first hand off.

Really well done article here about the Canes coach and GM. Pretty insightful especially if you aren't super aware of Tulsky's background.

I really liked this bit, as it's basically one of my exact points when someone asked what's to really like about Tulsky a few months ago:

Jarvis couldn't recall his immediate reaction when Tulsky was formally hired, but he did know something about him.

"I knew he was extremely smart," he said. "And that's hard to find in hockey sometimes."

The other thing is that Freddie looked like swiss cheese in the final, moreseo than Hart imo. That Cup win really hinged on making the right adjustments at the right time and Bussi getting it over the line, otherwise it really did look like Vegas was going take it, especially after Game 3.

They said Freddie got hurt in GM2 and tried to make it a go in GM3 and that def didn't workout. Canes adjusted whether by choice or not and Bussi came in and was solid. Hart's game fell off and you can't blame the guy for the loss but he needed to make that save on the Hall goal last night. Proved to be a killer.
Anyway it was a pretty entertaining series and the Canes are a likable team. Happy for Freddie and now we look forward to the draft and free agency before not caring about hockey until the fall. Well, not that many of us cared halfway through the Leafs season lol
