I’m having trouble pointing out a creative contract that was advantageous to the Leafs that was for an above average player.
Most of the creativity was for eking out lots of up front value for the Leafs stars without much if any commensurate scaling down of cap hit; unless Nylander was looking for 14M and the structure talked him down to 11ish (which was reportedly more like Treliving was asking for 9, Nylander asked for 10, and then waited until it became 11+)

If Pridham was just a cap guy: the current CBA is basically 20 years old now. Pridham had a massive edge over the the rest of the field originally but you don't need to be a genius to understand how it's calculated anymore. The Canes literally found a guy on twitter to be their cap expert.
If Pridham was a hockey ops guy: well he's been here for 12 years with little team success. It's not unreasonable for both sides to just feel a change of scenery was necessary. Pridham will have a future in the league but guys like him come and go.

2 assistant GMs down, 3 remain: Hayley Wickenheiser (Player Development), Darryl Metcalf (Hockey Research & Development), Ryan Hardy (Minor League Ops & GM, Toronto Marlies).
Metcalf's an odd one, the Leafs should have the best and biggest analytics team in the league and even when Dubas was in charge it's tough to really pinpoint a number of moves that you could make a reasonable argument they had a say in that were home runs. But we really have no idea what goes on beyond those doors.
Hardy's someone I could see rising up even further into the organization. I almost kind of get the feeling that when the Dubas to Treliving shift happened his influence probably got limited to just running the Marlies.

Brandon played an integral role in the organization over the past 12 seasons. We are sincerely appreciative of Brandon’s professionalism, commitment and dedication to the Maple Leafs throughout his tenure. Derek also brought valuable experience and insight to our hockey operations was also here for a bit. We thank both Brandon and Derek for their contributions to the organization and wish them and their families all the very best going forward.

Like was mentioned about. The CBA isn't new anymore. If you don't have an app that does salary calculations on a day by day basis at this point you aren't operating at the bare minimum of competency.
If we are evaluating on performance, aside from a lot of the promotion/demotion deals it's not like we saw a lot of steals in contracts. Whatever they were doing clearly wasn't working. Change isn't automatically good but I think any housecleaning should just be viewed as expected and we judge any moves on performance over the next year or two.
Any reservations on Chayka are moot at this point. There is no benefit to rooting for his failure. At the very least it sounds like he learned some tact around firing people so he's already marginally better than Arizona Chayka.

Have in mind, Cowan wasn't allowed to play in the AHL during the Olympic break because someone in the front office misunderstood (or negligently overlooked) the games-played limit of the CBA in regards to two-way players last year.... by a single game.

My understanding of Pridham's departure was that he had 2 years left on his contract and that Chayka (& Sundin?) wanted him to continue in his role. It was reported his interview for the GM position did not go well (maybe with Pelley?). As a consequence, he requested that he be allowed to depart -> he did not wish to continue to provide that role to MLSE. There was no grand grievance that he did his job poorly. The fact that past Leafs executives Nonis, Lamoriello, Dubas, Treliving & Shanahan kept him on as assistant GM and they made him co-GM when Treliving was fired underscores that. The General Managers were ultimately responsible for the dollars given on contracts - not Pridham. He'll land on his feet and be well compensated.

I've been thinking about this recently, and have come to a similar conclusion. Pridham isn't bad at his job - if he was, he wouldn't have lasted as long as he did - but he's no longer someone who can be considered ahead of the class when it comes to understanding the CBA. If he was, why were other teams always the first to find loopholes like deferred payments to bring down cap hits? He'll land another role and be alright in it - he's definitely good at taking advantage of what others have figured out - but his reputation certainly doesn't line up with his results.

I think it's harder for the person who crafted something to be the one that can break it most readily. Sure they will have knowledge of weaknesses, but their intent when designing will be to mitigate those weaknesses where possible. Great for compliance especially when transitioning from a management team of numerically illiterate buffoons, but the Leafs are looking for innovators and really could have used one during the last 6 years.
