Panarin to L.A.

Both situations could have been avoided by the same GM ironically. Tkachuk wanted to sign long term after his ELC, Tre said no, bridge deal. Tre could have signed Marner long term when he wanted to re-sign here, chose to roll the dice and lost....again.

That doesn’t sound like what the Marner camp said

That doesn’t sound like what the Marner camp said
We're not going down that path again. Before Marner's last year of his contract kicked in, he said just after the season ended that he wanted to re-sign with the Leafs. He said it again just before training camp.
May 6th 2024....
“That would be a goal,” Marner said when he was asked if he wants to stay in Toronto longterm. “I’ve expressed my love for this place, this city. I grew up here. We’ll start thinking about that now and trying to figure something out.”

I reiterate, that’s not what Marner’s camp said.

Elliotte Friedman
That summer, on Aug. 23, Matthews signed a four-year extension 10 months before hitting unrestricted free agency. There is a story behind this no one knew. According to several sources, the groundwork for that contract was actually laid in the summer of 2022. Two years before he could leave, one year before he could even sign, the Maple Leafs wanted to know if there was any reason to worry. After conversations about the state of the franchise and how everyone envisioned the future, Matthews told the Leafs he would re-sign as long as the train didn’t suffer a Fugitive-like crash — a promise he kept.

Two years before Marner could exit, there were conversations, but the Maple Leafs did not receive the same assurances.

Per Adam Wylde’s MLSE sources, Marner’s camp walked into the offseason of his last season and declared to the front office that Marner will be going to free agency and will not be discussing or negotiating during the season.

The Leafs acted accordingly in trying to trade Marner mid season when their mega offer was turned down.

The only reason there was even a sign and trade was the front office indicating they’d pursue tampering charges if and when Vegas eventually signs Marner and Marner himself balking at the backlash and the potential UFA process. Ferris even whined about it (trimmed his pay day a bit).

When was this?
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh... do you think I could get $18M per season for 4 years and........ ummmmm... and a NMC,... uummmmm and ahhhhh... I want it in my contract that no one in the media is allowed to mention me in a negative way.... and..... also.... I want my annual April golf trip paid for. If you don't agree, I'll tell my mom.
