You do realize that as soon as they're out of the playoff mix they are going to amp up the momentum, go on a nice winning streak, and finish 9th or 10th.

Don't get me wrong. I was fully on board for the proverbial "tank" idea, about 3 years ago. Not anymore though. That ship sailed a long time ago.

Lol........you're probably right. The second we're just about eliminated from the playoffs will the second that fire gets lit under their asses to finish in the ninth spot.

I want to get on board, but we're nearly four years removed from when Tank Nation should have ruled that I almost feel like it's too late.

That said, if things really go off the rails soon, I'll be getting my hopes up that we'll finally be able to draft a potentially elite forward.

On the Hot Stove, they mentioned tonight that the Leafs might be sellers at the the deadline depending on how tonight's game went.

I don't see them buying too much at this point.

I wonder if they have any real insight into that (i.e. Burke or Nonis talked to one of them and mentioned they are leaning that way), or if it's just pure speculation on the Hot Stove guys that they'd be sellers.  I wouldn't put anything past Burke at this point if he thinks he could make a huge trade.  I really hope he doesn't do something stupid like trading our first round pick again.

one way of dealing with it is by trying to trade late picks for some veterans that become ufa's...and see how that goes...first and foremost a veteran goalie and a veteran winger..

I'm not really into the tank nation notion, but I wouldn't be against being sellers this year.  Don't sell everything like Kessel and Lupul, but sell off anything that's not working like Armstrong, Connolly, etc.  Keep the core to build on next year, but sell what we can so we can use those assets to go after players like Nash, Schneider, etc.

I didn't see it but I wonder as well.  I also could speculate the leafs will sell somebody off ... Doesn't mean you should believe me.

As long as Burke is GM, the Leafs won't tank. Remember, one of Burke's early moves was to sign Martin Gerber, resulting in a meaningless bunch of wins down the stretch in '09.

I still can't figure that out and I've stopped trying, except this thread reminded me of those days. It's not like Gerber was going to be a long term solution. He only played the remainder of the season with the Leafs.

For all Burke's bluster at the time of wanting John Tavares, drafting him would have been a long shot, but drafting Brayden Schenn or Matt Duchene wasn't.

I'm not talking about the team throwing games, but look at Tampa. They win the Cup in '04, then they somehow get bad enough to draft Stamkos and Hedman. They rebound to get within an overtime goal of the finals, and now they are in on the Fail for Nail sweepstakes.

Tampa are an extreme example, but how else do you acquire young elite talent without paying a huge price in the assets you already have? But it's not within Burke's philosophy to go this way.

A couple more losses here in short order and it may be time to get excited for the draft.  :-\
