We traded Polak for two of San Jose's second round picks, and the deal for Andersen is essentially two second round picks.

So we pretty much traded Polak for Andersen. That makes me like this deal a little more.
 
I don't see a down side unless he is the next Raycroft and I think Andersen will handle T.O. better than he did.
Lou can team have faith in him and I have faith in Lou and team. Otherwise 5M per year for a #1 is pretty standard.  Lets hope it all works out.
 
Don't laugh but when I was a kid at private school the V.P. Bill Burrage used to walk the halls with a paddle and you were sure to get at least one beating with it per year, if you were lucky. Better than a slashing bread knife when you got home.

Oh yeah I remember grade school and kids getting the strap on a regular basis. Have no idea when that practice ended but it was normal to us.
 
Beatings and stappings were normal and needed and when you got home your Dad beat you as well. That is why  I am happy contributor to this site. I can take anything and that includes Nik the Trick.
Feels like the old days.

Oh by the way the kids today need regular of the same but we lost it and now generation needy are taking over.

He is the #1 now, but not necessarily when this team is ready to compete. Most are saying we are years away, probably close to the 5 years, so Andersen may just be a bridge goalie (or not depending on his play).
Also, if he plays awful there is nothing to say we are stuck with him for the entire 5 years, trades are always a possibility, as proven by moving Clarkson.

This deal on its own is not going to significantly increase the pace of the rebuild. We needed a capable NHL goalie for next season, so why not go out and get one? Bernier isn't the answer, maybe Andersen is?
I don't take great joy in watching this team tank, would rather this team do a little better next year and get to watch some entertaining hockey.
The Leafs aren't going to be a playoff team next year due to this move, but likely won't finish dead last either and I'm just fine with that.

I am not so much bent out of shape as I am concerned that this is the wrong move at too high a price when it was unnecessary to do so.

I am puzzled by the history of trading for a part time goalie on a reasonably successful team with the expectation that he will be able to translate that into similar, if not better, numbers on a full time basis with a Leaf team that has an acknowledged less than average defence. Then, as usual, we sign him to a long term contract without any assurance he will achieve the forgoing.

Frankly, the numbers Andersen had last year are roughly comparable to those of James Reimer.

Reimer played behind a significantly worse defence it must be remembered. Andersen was supported by better forwards and better defence men  -- to the point where the availability of a Duck blue liner as a free agent was one most Leaf fans' wish list.

And what did we get for Reimer?

Not much; certainly not a first and a second.

It is arguable then that we would have been better off re-signing Reimer, keeping the picks and using one of them to draft a goalie prospect to develop over the next two years when we then actually need him.Finally, I see this as a departure from the otherwise consistent patient "Shanaplan" rebuild.

Couldn't agree more with Sluggo!
Those are my thoughts exactly.  For those that say well we had a bunch of picks anyways, well how about they use some of those picks as a package to get a defencemen or move up in the draft?  Signing Reimer as a UFA would have given them that option.

I have pretty much loved everything the Leafs have done with the ShanaPlan until this one.

Even if Andersen turns out to be a success (which is still very possible) it still cost too much considering you could have had Reimer who is every bit as good as Andersen and then they could have kept the picks.

If Reimer wasn't out there as a UFA then I would have been okay with the trade because they obviously do need a goalie....but the fact that he is available makes it harder to be happy with this deal.



 
I think the ongoing concern with Reimer was always his durability. If he could start healthy on a more consistant basis, I wonder if the Leafs would have kept him?

Reimer may have been pegged as a backup.  We'll see shortly if any team takes a chance on him as a starter.
 
If Reimer can't land a #1 job I wonder if there's any chance we let Bernier go and use the money to sign Reimer at around $3m??
2 good goalies for $8m total salary isn't too bad.
