I would imagine Chayka would want to hire a coach of his choosing.
What’s Aki Berg up to?
Since that seems to be the hiring template. Random guys from the past.

Playing the odds. Only 3 coaches in over 100 years. Last one was Bowman. Before him, the 50's.I don't know how winning 1 Cup automatically disqualifies you. Cassidy has gotten a lot out of the teams he's coached. I wouldn't mind seeing it he could do anything with the Leafs

Tie Domi anyone!?
How's that playing the odds? By that logic anyone who isn't a Stanley Cup winning coach has a better chance of winning a Cup than a coach that has previously won a Stanley Cup. I haven't won a Cup as a coach yet, so am I more likely to win a Cup if I coached the Leafs than Bruce Cassidy if he's the right fit? Ok that's on the nose. How about a minor league coach? An AHL coach? Just using that metric is highly incomplete when determining who to hire.Playing the odds. Only 3 coaches in over 100 years. Last one was Bowman. Before him, the 50's.
I know it's hard for you to understand but it's pretty simple really. How's that playing the odds? He's making a salient point and you're stubbornly making a dumb, sweeping generalization....and yet you're attacking HIS intelligence?I know it's hard for you to understand but it's pretty simple really.
I wonder how good a package they can get for him. Ugly times.![]()
The Maple Leafs are on the clock with Auston Matthews
For new Leafs GM John Chayka, keeping the superstar captain in the fold will be critical to delivering an expedited retool.www.nytimes.com
Things are going great!

Yeah, they'd get more at the trade deadline most likely. And that seems more reasonable too. Matthews wouldn't demand a summer trade, but if the season goes bad then near the trade deadline is the most logical place to trade him.His value is lower now than it should be. They may be able to get better value IF Matthews starts next season hot, leading the league in goals by the time of the trade deadline. Any acquiring team would be able to get Matthews for TWO playoff runs, which is incredibly valuable to them if he's back to his monster goal scoring form.
It's incredibly sad that we've gotten to this point.
I think this is most likely too. But if they trade Mathews and Nylander at the right time, that can be sped up. It may be best for us if Matthews does demand a trade this year rather than walk in two for nothing. My prediction is a repeat of last season, and pissed away and devalued assets. In two years, we can start rebuilding a core. Give those guys 5 years to develop, so we're 10ish years out from contending again.
We all want this - but will it actually be possible? Seems to me Pelley wants to show the haters wrong. He was quite combative in his replies yesterday, especially when he started to refute all the reporting about him recently. Also, keep Keith Pelley away from this team.
