2025-26 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

I couldn't read the whole Athletic article, but the teaser was very succinct, and correct IMO.

For the record (if anyone cares; no reason why you should) I said immediately after he left that I think the Leafs will not win the division, will make the playoffs, but not win as many playoff games as they did this year. To me, they are likely to go out in R1, and if not in R2. My thought is that the only way they go deeper is if Stolarz/Woll get hot and take them there. Possible, but at this point overall they have taken a significant step backwards.

So in other words same old same. LOL Doesn't matter where we finish in the regular season it's what happens in the playoffs, Florida finished 5th in the East with only 98 points last year, it's a long season and there will be more changes coming so lets chill a bit and see where we are in April.

Ok, and how does this rule screw over the Leafs specifically more than other teams? 😅

It’s just a delayed activation of the rule, which normally would be used to bank more accrued cap space during the season for those chunky deadline additions. But with the new playoff cap rules (annualized cap hits of the roster must fit the cap ceiling), this probably isn’t going to be used in that way.

The main benefit is outlined in the tweet for teams like Florida who have some big tickets on the shelf.

Well, that's a bummer. It looked like we were getting a different Laughton this season.

Presumably this just means Kampf slides back into the 4C spot. I wonder if there's any dominos with that though. Cowan at 4RW likely doesn't work quite as well in that case.
Cowan at 4RW makes no sense to me period.

Losing someone to waivers (either a depth D or F) to keep Cowan up. The whole team kind of stuck last night but I didn't come away from the game being blown away by Cowan forcing his way on the team.

Yeah I don't disagree there. I'm almost hoping the Laughton injury gives them an excuse to change their mind on Cowan.

What are the implications for Easton Cowan, knowing the chemistry that was forming with Laughton and Steven Lorentz?

Berube: We’ve liked Easton’s camp a lot. I loved him in practice again today. He was very noticeable out there.

We have to see how it plays out still. With Kampf filling in for Laughton, or whatever it is, I don’t think it changes Easton’s game that much. I think Easton can play different roles for you at different times. I know he is young and still has a lot to learn, but I love his energy and his hound mentality. He has really good puck skills.

Will we see the new Kampf line in Detroit on Saturday?

Berube: Not necessarily. I am not sure, exactly, who I am bringing. I don’t know that yet.

Kampf promptly waived after this, so...
