Quote from: CarltonTheBear on February 09, 2023, 01:52:41 PMDeal seems fine. Obviously there's potential he'll exceed that value but considering his career to date that's probably the most he could have gotten really. Especially contrasted with the Liljegren/Sandin extensions.

It is fine but we're in trouble if we need to play him in the playoffs at this stage in his experience. 37/38 got raked by the Bruins' forecheck last game, but Timmins was even worse before.
They didn't get raked in the game in Boston. Marner get raked too? He was -4..Willy -3. Liljegren went 10 games without being in the ice for a 5v5 goal against. One off game and they're now terrible and we're in trouble? Don't buy it. Add in Samsonov was pretty terrible as well.
And Timmins is a project at this time of his career. Let's wait until the trade deadline is over before we have to debate if we're in trouble or not going forward.

I don't agree, 37/38 didn't handle a playoff-intense forecheck well, and that's a reminder that they have no track record (yet) of doing so in the playoffs.  It's a known vulnerability of the Leafs (and not limited to those two).  Don't put words in my mouth; I didn't say they are terrible.  They are unproven.  And Timmins is even more vulnerable.  That's my point.

They got raked but they also had pretty good performances in the other 2 games against Boston. Not sure it's anything to really make conclusions over.

I feel like the perception of getting dominated also gets impacted when you goaltender can't stop a beachball in the game.

Definitely.

It was an astute pickup and he's played well, and it's a decent deal for both sides.

I can't help, however, think this deals says as much about the state of Leafs NHL ready defensive prospects in the system as is does how they value Timmins.

QuoteWhat is the status of Conor Timmins? He wasn't with the regular group.

Keefe: He was skating on his own. We have eight defensemen, so he is the ninth D. He wouldn't get many reps. He was out there doing all the skill development work with all of the rest of the D beforehand.

I have talked to Conor right from the time we made the trade to add those extra two defensemen. For the most part, he is going to be more on the developmental path for the rest of the season.

As I have said a few times — and I have certainly talked to him about as Kyle has — through his time here, we think he has shown such great ability to play and has such great potential. We think he has missed a very important time through his personal development. Whether it is injuries or bouncing around — whatever it might be — he hasn't devleoped physically the way that he otherwise would have if he didn't have disrupted offseasons and things like that.

We are making up for some lost time there and are continuing to work with him, which I think will help him not only down the line and beyond the season, but even if it comes to a point where we need him this season, we think he will be further along to help us.

Through my time in development at the AHL level and such, sometimes playing the games is not in the best interest of the player. I think this is one of those examples. If he gets proper development and can make up for some lost time, he is going to be a very good player in the league for a long time. Our additional depth has allowed us to put us on that path.

Old Leaf management teams would have thrown this guy to the wolves and played him right off. This administration is doing the wise thing and actually developing him.

People forget the hand Dubas has in all of this. All three Leaf organizations are top notch now and they actually don't rush players anymore. Good to see.

Leaf fans: "we don't rush players, smort!"

Same leaf fans: "can't wait to see Knies signed and in the lineup against Tampa"

Knies has been developing for 2 years at the U of Minn. I think there's an excitement to see Knies play more then anything. I also think most all would prefer him to start on the Marlies but that's not an option if he signs this season.

I have not been a big fan of the 9 dmen strategy.
But I'm reluctant to pass firm judgement as I don't have all the facts.

It is very obvious they received good return value in the trade.
They must like him with the contract he got. Most fans probably agree with them. I do.
I would also agree that it seems premature to toss him into the playoffs in a regular 5-6 role.

Maybe he is the reason for 9 dmen. To keep a spot on a NHL playoff roster and not trade him away seems to say something.
Maybe they saw something in him that they think they can fix and they don't want to part with that.
At some point when desired, he could be eligible for a 14 day (or less) conditioning loan to the AHL so he can get some games in and help if needed.

Interesting development to watch ..

I don't blame Dubas for loading up on D men. Leafs have had a lot of D injuries this, season and as you're aware our top 3 were out at the same time. Playoffs are long and there will be injuries. Leafs have quite a few Marlies that can fill in up front. On D it's a different story. Benn is the only guy there that could fill in.
