2026-27 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion | Official: Sundin & Chayka to lead front office

Yes Vancouver had great success drafting…

Juolevi was Benning’s choice back in 2016 because the GM wanted a defenceman and loved what he saw from the Finn at the world juniors. He could have chosen Mikhail Sergachev or Charlie McAvoy. Benning is believed to have gone with Brackett’s first-round recommendation ever since.

Subsequent round 1 picks by the Canucks for the duration of Brackett's tenure after getting overruled on Juolevi:
2017: 5th Elias Pettersson (hard to see a better option at this slot; Jason Robertson deep in rd 2 probably wouldn't have been as good with VAN)
2018: 7th Quinn Hughes (hmm, arguably should be 1st overall; Dahlin taller and meaner)
2019: 10th Vasili Podkolzin (missed on Caulfield, Boldy, but Pod got a raw deal on development with Canucks coaching)

I think it's pretty clear that Haley being a part time employee was why they split from each other. I don't think there is any "irony" there Steve.

Additional notes
The Leafs are paying big money to bring in Andy O’Brien as strength and conditioning coach. He’s well-known in the industry as Crosby’s longtime trainer. That’s a good thing. What’s not such a good thing: The Leafs fired conditioning coaches Louis Rojas, Artie Hairston and Trevor Bartoli on Friday, basically too late for any of them to likely find a job for the upcoming NHL season

Official now. O’Brien has been involved with NHL teams since Matthews entered the league and has picked up 4 Cups during that span.

He joins the Leafs as VP of Sport Performance

Joining O’Brien’s staff are Dr. Craig Slaunwhite as Director, Health and Performance Integration, Jason Martin as Head Strength and Conditioning Coach, and Josh Crouse as Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach, while Dr. Jordan Shallow will join as Human Performance Consultant.

Given how everybody broke down last season (Olympics compressed schedule, right after the 4 Nations compressed schedule notwithstanding), it was inevitable there would be changes made here in an area of particular interest to Chayka historically.

Wooing Andy O’Brien successfully is quite the coup.

So you're saying there's a chance he picks up Cup 5 with the Leafs!?
and 6; his pace is 2 Cups per NHL stop.

PPP notes that Chayka and O'Brien have history, when Chayka realized his playing career was over (injury) and pivoted to optimizing performance for other players
With increasingly concrete beliefs about what skills to emphasize, and a deep base of nutrition and training knowledge, Chayka established the National Hockey Institute while he was still an active player. The idea, supported by his dad and Andy O’Brien — before the latter became one of hockey’s highest-profile trainers — was to create a one-stop shop for young players looking to push past vague instructions like “get bigger and stronger.”

“You hear a lot about ‘work ethic’ or ‘compete,’” Chayka says. “I always thought it’d be great if you could actually dig into this and try to understand, in objective terms, what it means and if it’s even important. There were some people who I felt were valuing things that were irrelevant, and some who weren’t valuing things that were actually really important.”

“The one thing I can say for sure, for somebody like myself, to have somebody at the top who is progressive and who has an understanding of the nuances of a role like mine in a department like mine, I think that that really stood for a lot,” O’Brien said. “When I was working with the Panthers, I felt that the Panthers had that in Bill Zito. He wasn’t interested in doing things simply because that’s what other teams were doing or because that’s the way it was done before. He was always really good at asking the question, what is the best way to do it?I felt like John is very bright. He’s very progressive. I thought it was just a great opportunity to be a part of that.”

...

“Bob is the guy who’s in his late 30s. But his biologic age is younger than his chronologic age, if you ask me. Like, he’s got a relatively young body. He’s young because he takes such good care of himself. He doesn’t have the same wear and tear as a goalie that’s 37, 38 years old. So I’m a big fan of Bob as a person and as an athlete.”

I didn't really make the connection at first but yeah having O'Brien here full-time to continue working with Bob should hopefully be very fruitful for him.

I hear McDavid is coming to the Leafs to retire after his contract is done and will accept no other team! Insiderrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
