2025-26 NHL Thread

That's just a stupid GM and coach here in Toronto. He never got a fair shake here so he left. I've seen a lot of Marlies games over the last few years and this guy deserved a shot.
He always played well enough in the preseason to warrant a spot on the roster too, imo. For some reason, there has been a reluctance to let players from within get a chance and find their way in the NHL. Other Contending teams do it, so the "win now" mantra isn't an excuse.

He was cut from the Bruins camp too though.
Yes but they, like the Leafs never tried him in a spot where he could show his talents. He was a 1st line player with the Marlies. So he's a 4th line player in the NHL? Totally different roles. He did nothing in the 1st 6 games with the Bruins. They moved him up the lineup and boom. Will it continue? Who knows but he's been given a chance. Just like Robertson this year. They finally put him in the top 6 and he flourished. And now Berube in his wisdom has now put him back on the 4th line because he tries too hard I guess.
I've never understood the calling up a 1st line guy to put on the 4th line in the NHL. You need a bottom 6 guy, that's who you call up.

The Leafs called Steeves up and plunked him on the 4th line. So he sucked it up and his hits/60 was second to Reaves. But he got less than 10 mins/game and almost no PP time - 4th line checking role. In the AHL, aside from holding Marlies all time scoring records, he was 8th in AHL scoring last season, 2nd in goal scoring, 4th or 5th in PPG among players who played 40 games or more. Want a little scoring and physicality for your third line? "No, we'll trade a 2nd/3rd pick for non-physical Maccelli to keep the press box warm .."
He probably won't continue on the current pace but he could be a 15-20 goal scorer getting 12-14 mins/game ... like McMann is doing but not as quick or as physical - close though.
