Woll and Benoit traded to Philly

Goalies need to play and having 3 guys that can actually play on your roster doesn't work and is a waste of cap space.
That's a good point. Are they really going to have Hildeby ride the pine for the whole year when he could be developing? I think last year was pretty instructive. Hildeby posted by far the best SV% among the three goalies last year and proved to be durable so why not give him runway? Especially if he's younger and is developing (And AA is waivers exempt so we do essentially have three goalies).

It's funny because I've heard people say well what if Hildeby turns out to be bad? And my thought was it's also possible Woll gets injured or needs to go on leave again - then what? It cuts both ways and there's risk to both scenarios.

And then you're taking another risk that his stock will rebound. I think he can, but I think he can also get injured. And if that's the case then we'd likely get even less a return than what we got. It's a bet one way or another.

This old saying popped into my head
“The team that gets the best player wins the trade”

They all have warts.
I don't see Benoit (#6/7 dman), Ersson (depth goalie) or Andrae (#7 dman) being flipped for a 3rd round pick
But getting one for Woll seems roughly reasonable
Woll seems like the best player in this deal.

With Stolarz injury prone, he will platoon with Hildeby. Akhtyamov is waivers exempt for callup depth.
The emergence of Akhtyamov has them in very good shape in goal

With the addition of Andrae, they may have to carry 8 dmen to protect Villeneuve who is no longer waivers exempt. With the age of their D, it is not a bad idea anyway.

From the Marlies Playoffs, Villeneuve must be in the Leafs lineup next season. Actually, a bunch of Marlies should get a chance, open the team for the youth movement.

They'll have to go through camp, but I would agree that Villeneuve, Cowan (which seems like a no brainer), Quillan, Tverberg, Groulx, and Haymes should all get long looks in camp. A third line of Tverberg - Quillan - Cowan might be kinda fun.

I want to make it clear that I'm not shitting on Woll at all, we saw him game in and game out and saw him have some very impressive games. But I think that's giving us a skewed view of reality.

I liked him, still do, and obviously I would have preferred to move Stolarz, but his contract is nuts, and hes coming off a horrific season - he has no trade value at all.

But let's take a step back here - I'm not an avid watcher of other NHL teams, so when trades like this come up, I look at stats history and kind of make a judgement.

Now if I showed you these numbers:

25gp 294 .907
42gp 2.73 .909
39gp 3.31 .899

Career playoffs
14gp 2.73 .906

Do these seem like numbers that would yield a high return for a goalie? They don't to me. If I was unfamiliar with this goalie and just looked at those basic stats, my initial reaction would be 'meh'.

I think alot of us have overvalued Woll, and think he's worth far more than he actually is. I think we need to step back a bit and try to be a little objective about his actual performance.

Could he turn out to be a stud goalie and dominate the crease? Absolutely it could happen. But does what we've seen so far trend in that direction? I don't think so.
