Did Feaster somehow think he was getting Suter or something, a la Cliff Fletcher and Finger/Sauer not long ago?
Feaster: "Get me the agent for that wide man defenseman on the phone.. you know the one from Nashville."
Assistant: "Wait... what? You mean Suter? He's rather wide looking on the ice."
Feaster: "That's what I'm saying you INGRATE.. that really wide looking man on defense from the team out east down there."
Assistant: "Ok, so not Suter.. but Wideman?
Feaster: "Sure, uh yeah yeah.. whatever that's the guy." *takes a bite of turkey leg* "sign that guy or something to whatever he asks for. Let's go, I'm tired."

I don't think it's fair to say Wideman is indistinguishable from Liles. There seems to be two pretty significant differences in Wideman's favour. The first is that Wideman is two and a half years younger, so his deal covers years 28-33. Liles' deal covers years 32-36.
The other is that Wideman seems to be regarded as a more well rounded defenseman. He's gotten regular and significant PK time over the last five seasons and, as a result, his ice time over those years has ranged from 23:33 all the way up to 25:09. Liles has never really gotten a look on the PK and his ice time has ranged from 18:28 to to 22:01.
I don't know if 1.4 million covers both of those differences but I'd probably say that both deals are equally questionable.

The way it isn't like the Finger contract is that the contract is with an NHL level talent.

Wideman generally faces the tougher competition (his Corsi Rel QOC), and Liles generally drives the offence more (Rel Corsi).

I'm just sure that you can appreciate that that one statistic, presented entirely without context(what's the average number of 5 on 5 goals a defenseman getting 21 minutes a night would get, is that indicative of his numbers throughout his career or is it a 14 game aberration), doesn't really say much objectively.
