What's wrong with Auston Matthews?

I'm ready to buy in that Matthews is back. So with 40 games left on the season if he plays at Auston Matthews capabilities (and not superhuman 60+ goal scoring Auston)...he scores...20, 25 more goals this year?

Some cool players he could still pass this year
Joe Thornton 430 goals
Rick Nash 437 goals
Pavel Bure 437 goals
Gary Roberts 438 goals
Rick Vaive 441 goals
Ilya Kovalchuk 443 goals
Daniel Alfredsson 444 goals
Doug Gilmour 450 goals

I'd like to join you, but very small sample size ... and my question is, if he is back, what happened to suddenly make the difference? Unless he was burdened by Marc Savard somehow?

Does Auston's resurgence coincide with his switch back to Bauer equipment in late November?

Crazy Bure only made it to 437 goals.

What is more impressive is that he broke Sundin's record in 241 less games, almost 3 full seasons before.

Sundin Maple Leafs Goals: 420 in 905 games
Matthews: 421 in 664 games

What would Sundin's number be without wings like Hoglund on his side ? Anyway, keep going Matthews. Can wait to see you pass Gretzky then Ovie on goals scored in Blue and White. Go Leafs Go!!!

The whole team looks better post-Savard, so, who knows? Maybe it was just enough of a shot across the bow to get everyone going.

He is ahead of Ovie's goal pace...

Knies was also taken off the top line for McMann in the 1st post-Savard game, which was very overdue. Knies had just 1 point (an assist) in 8 games prior to that. 8 points in 6 games while playing mostly away from Matthews since the firing.

Scoring was different for much of Sundin's career as a Leaf - clutch and grab reduced scoring substantially.

And out of the dead-puck clutch and grab era.
