The Official 2013 MLB Thread

They already had a playoff berth clinched, but the Detroit Tigers just got no-hit by Miami's Henderson Alvarez. A wild pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 9th is what ended it. To make it more surreal, Alvarez was in the on-deck circle.

The Tigers had rested some of their regulars and pulled others early in the game, but they now enter the post-season on a 3 game losing streak. Not the way I want to see them head to Oakland to start the ALDS on Friday.

Deadspin just posted this picture of the attempted double play that the Red Sox failed to turn in last night's second inning. They didn't get the runner at first, which ended up being crucial as that would have been the third out and the Tigers went on to score either three or four more times in the inning, but the above is a picture of the out they "did" get. There's also video of it and it makes it even more obvious that Drew is nowhere near second base when he ostensibly forces the out.
 
It's the Cardinals all the way...to the World Series.  St, Louis Iambasted the L.A. Dodgers at home, by a score of 9-O to win the NLCS 4 games to 2 & advance to the World Series.  Who they'll play will depend on...

...the outcome of the ALCS between the Red Sox and the Detroit Tigers, in which Boston can wrap it up tonight at home, as they currently lead 3 games to 2.

Shane Victorino's grand slam home run helped seal Boston's victory over the Detroit Tigers a 5-2 win, and propel the Red Sox to the World Series.

The Red Sox now meet the St. Louis Cardinals in the Ootober classic beginning next week (Wednesday evening).

He's taking another position within the organization. From the sounds of things, he's retiring from managing but not from baseball.

lol that was probably the most amazingly terrible base slide in history.  I love how he kind of looks up at the ump to say "did he get me?"  8)

Pretty sure Leyland told him to grease up if he was planning on running at all.
 
Bloomberg has gotten in on the sports team valuation business and recently posted this article about MLB team values that I think is pretty interesting for a number of reasons:

As you can see, unlike what Forbes does Bloomberg tries and encapsulates the true votal of a franchise by tying it to the value of the regional sports network they can prop up, their 1/30th stake in MLB advanced media as well as various real estate, merchandise and media they can own that is tied into how much a team is truly worth. The Yankees, to nobody's surprise, ranked the highest with a value of 3.3 billion dollars. Tampa was at the bottom end at 530 million and our own Blue Jays ranked 11th at 950 million in large part due to Sportsnet which had the fifth highest ranking among RSN's at 235 million. It also estimates that the Jays were profitable to the tune of 15 million last year.
 
Cardinals looked like they all had massive hangovers last night.  Wow they were sloppy. 

I don't think Boston can be stopped. 
 
St. Louis evens the Series by defeating the Red Sox in Game 2 (in Boston) by a 4-2 score.

I'm 100% certain it was intentional.  And my wife is 100% certain it wasn't...  Still the right call either way, as intent is irrelevant to the obstruction rule.

It doesn't look intentional to me - Middlebrooks doesn't really seem aware of where Craig actually is and his legs come up as a result of him pressing his knees into the ground while he's trying to get to his feet (a little awkwardly, sure). But, like you said, intention doesn't matter, and he clearly obstructed Craig, who was well within what is reasonably considered to be the base path.
