Nah man, a good influence on the boards goes a long way for the new kids, especially come playoffs when we all need to buckle down and get'er done. Experience is very valuable in steadying the more exuberant youth through the ups and downs of the stretch drive and grind of the playoff series. You want them to trust the process that got them this far and take the lesson from their mistakes and move on to making sure their next post is executed well.

IIHF rules state the play shall be blown dead as soon as an opposing player steps foot in the crease.

I would take it a step further and issue a 2 minute minor for it.  We have a two minute minor for shooting the puck over the glass, so why not two minutes for a crease violation.

Your goaltender is arguably the most important player on your team.  You generally only have one other one that's not very good, he's on the ice for 60 minutes a game, and usually is one of the highest paid guys on your team.

That's not really the rule - at least, that's not how it's enforced. If an opposing players skates through the crease, it's generally left uncalled. If they stop in the crease, then it's blown dead.

Also, the league tried something similar in the late 90s with the whole "skate in the crease equals no goal" thing, and it was an absolute mess. I have no interest in going back to that, at all.

At most, blow the play dead if there's contact with the goaltender in/near the crease. Anything more than that is overkill.

Yes I remember those days fondly.  Stanley Cups were decided on that very rule.  ;D

Sure, it maybe overkill.  It's just getting to the point the opposing players are using the tactic to run over the other teams goalie, and there are no consequences.  That last two years, how many times has Freddy been hit in the head and had to sit out?

Then there is the entire goalie interference debacle that is going on right now.  No one really knows what the actual rule or call on the ice will be.  If that doesn't kill the flow of the game, then I don't know what does. 

My point is, I think goalies need to be able to do their jobs unimpeded, without the unnecessary risk of getting hurt.  If that means drawing up a rule that is more black and white, so be it.  The beginning of this season they started calling out players on the face-off violations.  Took everyone a little while to get use to it, but now hardly anyone gets an actual penalty since they got use to the rule.

Controversial goalie interference calls happen, like, once every 10 games. It doesn't adversely affect the game's flow at all.
