You'd think Reimer would start tonight because he is 4-0-2 in his career against the Penguins with a 2.27 GAA and .931 SV%, plus Bernier stating on the radio the other day that he still feels some pain in his knee.  But Reimer will certainly start tomorrow's game.

Bernier having pain in his knee is one thing, but I think goalie stats like those over a 6-game sample size are essentially meaningless and shouldn't be a factor indecision-making ...

You do or don't think 6 games is a good sample size? I would say that's an excellent sample size - it's one game short of a 7 game series.

If what you want to do is predict the future (ie: the next game or series of games or season) then I don't think 6 games over the course of multiple years is helpful.  I also don't think a 7-game series is a big enough sample size -- not even close.

A 7-game series is enough to answer the question "was this goalie's play a key factor in winning the series"?  But on its own, it just doesn't tell you much about the next series or next season. 

In this case .931, 2.27 is (in the grand scheme of things) close to both Reimer's and Bernier's "normal good results".
 
With respect you are wrong. A sample size of 6 games is more than enough to establish a goalie who has a teams # or consistently plays well against them. Coaching 101 really. This Leaf loss will be all on Carlyle - especially if Bernier gets lit up.

It's not even debatable who should be getting the start for the Leafs tonight. Plus Bernier went on the record that he was still experiencing pain in his knee? Good thing Carlyle has Phaneuf around to take the heat.

Not really, I agree with prince, it's not a great indicator of who should start.

That's an even smaller sample size and a stretch argument.

Also...

"Sometimes I feel a little pinch in my knee, but I have nothing to worry about"... Bernier. If anything I'd be more concerned with the hernia recovery but then his doctors likely have that under control.

I'll add that I don't see anything wrong with the notion of starting Reimer, I may even lean that way if nothing but to keep him fresh but I don't really disagree with starting Bernier, especially if the coaches believe he will give them the greatest chance for victory.

That's fair.

If I'm Carlyle and I'm stuck on who I start tonight I do what most coaches do and go with the guy with proven success against the team we're playing against. It's a pretty easy decision too.  Anyways enjoy the game !
 
Holy how did that find the 5 hole. Second straight game falling behind with weak goal after carrying the play.
