                          ....that's Russian for....

                                        "Let the Games begin!!!"

,.. amid continuing terror threats, ongoing state censonship of media (Russian journalists / reporters are threatened & harassed from time to time), social media censorship ( Canada's four-man bobsleigh member Jason Kripps " Team Kripps" found his website blocked.  No apparent reason given), and lastly, jailing of members of the gay / lesbian community in Russian society, in which Russian President Putin defends the move in saying that " It is necessary to protect our youth".

Even former leader Mikhail Gorbachev has decried Putin's governance of certain democratic principles.  While Russia has come a long way from those Glasnost & Perestroika days, there's still a ways to go before one can call Russian society truly democratic.  Harkening back to the dark days of tbe Soviet empire, there's no comparison now.  Still...

Anyways, speaking of the Sochi Games, they are by far the most expensive yet, and the venues quite modern.  A stretch of highway, ss an example, cost $200M (Cdn) per kilometre.  The construction of these Games has been fraught with corruption and fraud.  Nothing surprising for most familiar with Olympic Games building.
The displaced people, whose homes were demolished to make room for further construction, were housed in a neatly-built subdivision.  Many seem satisfied with their new dwellings.

Not all Russisns are happy with these Olympics, with many claiming the rising costs have added to just about everything including the price of public transportation, as many believe much of the cost overruns couid have been better spent roads & infrastructure maintensnce.

The opening ceremonies were lavish with plenty of Russian culture and classical music which is good.  Vladislav Tretiak, legendary goaltender, along with legendary skater Irina Rodrina, lit the Olympic cauldron.  The ceremonies were colourful, awash in plenty of fireworks, dancing, adornment of costumes, structures, symbols, etc.

So did Putin take off his shirt during the opening ceremonies and tell the crowd how great he was?

He challenged Obama to a bear fighting competition and won.

Norwegians started harvesting medals right from the very beginning. I currently live in Norway, it is kind of cool to witness how they cheer for their athletes. Whatever on skis is extremely popular in Norway, especially cross country skiing, something like national religion. They can dedicate 10 out of 12 pages of sport section in newspapers to cross country skiing. Those who bring back gold are like Gods for most of the country.

Edit: Canada and my country Czech Rep. with a bronze each, good start too!

There's a girl from my town - we get about 3 days a year snow on average, if even that - competing for GB in the snowboard slopestyle. Very entertaining sport. I doubt she's a chance for a medal and making the final would be a huge thing - Aimee Fuller.

Quite looking forward to the Jamaicans in the Bobsleigh again, and watching the skeleton. That looks absolutely petrifying.

I went to high school with Laura Fortino, a defenceman on the women's hockey team. And her dad was my math teacher.

It's crazy to think she's at the Olympics and I'm just on my couch yelling at Randy.

I don't know anyone there this year, but, I went to school with Gillian Ferrari, who was on the team for a long time, and my neighbour married Cherie Piper's brother.

It's pretty cool cos there's only two athletes from this entire country there (both representing GB) - the one above and another girl in the figure skating. For a country with no snow and one public ice rink that's not bad at all!

(There's 5 athletes representing Ireland also, but I don't think any of them are actually Irish )

Way to go, Canada!

In the women's freestyle skiing moguls, Canadian sisters Justine and Chloe Dufour-Lapointe won gold & silver, with Justine the gold & Chloe the silver, while American Hannah Kearney earned the bronze.

Earlier yesterday, in men's snowboard slopestyle finals, Canada's Mark McMorris won the bronze, having had a less than stellar performance in the qualification round.

Kevin Reynolds, who subbed for Patrick Chan in the free skate team competition, ( Chan will ooncentrate on his preparation for the Men's singles event), won Canada's it's first skating medal with a silver.  Reynold's presentation in the men's event portion assured Canada of the medal, while Scott Moir & partner Tessa Virtue finished second in the ice dance free skate portion.

In the Women's portion of the team event, Russia's 15 year old phenom Yulia Lipinzkaya vaulted Team Russia to gold Wwith her picture-perfect performance.

Russia with the gold and the U.S. the bronze were other
finishers in the team competition (overall resuits).

Points results were:  Russia 75 (Gold); Canada 65 (silver);
USA 60 ( Bronze),

Will we be discussing mens hockey here or in a separate thread?

What is the Canadian mens hockey and US schedule?

Canada wins another gold!  Men's 1,500m short-track speedskating saw Charles Hamelin, world champion and all, take first place and the gold, while China's Han Tianyu won silver and Russia's Viktor Ahn wins bronze.

C'mon Canada, way to go!

just watched the gold medal presentation for Charles Hamelin. Nice. Nice. *goosebumps*  And I really really like the arrangement/version of the national anthem they used.
