Devils @ Leafs - Oct. 21st, 7:00pm - TSN4

Every year, there is guaranteed one team that the pundits predicted preseason
will be a top team that flames out. Yes it’s early but…..

I'd take Hughes over Matthews in a heartbeat. At least the kid shows up most nights. I said it a million times Matthews has the talent to be exceptional along with the like of McD and Mackinnon but his heart and grit is non existent.

Treliving has had time now to remake this team into what he and Berube want, but it still looks like a collection of spare parts. Where is the hard forecheck, where is the dogged pursuit of the puck, where is the organized dump/chase. There seems to be no plan from top to bottom. I know it's early but this is a really disappointing start to the season.

Leafs start slow almost every year and then take off with a good November.
Will give you credit GT with your optimism. I'm not sold on this team. We are definitely weaker than last year. I personally think it's going to be a down year from last year I'm going to say under 100 points and definitely not atop of the division. See what changes are made to improve the team which hopefully they don't mortgage more of the future which already looks like s**t.

Going to be a challenge. Not much as sure fire prospects, no 1st rounders till 2028 which I hope they don't trade and nothing exciting in the minors plus a bunch of guys who won't waive. Things are not looking good.

I never said I have optimism with this team. I just stated the truth. Leafs have a tendency to start slow and then they take off in Nov. I have no idea what this team is this year. I don't think Tre had a very good off season and def gave away too much last spring.

My issue is where are the flashes. Matthews had a couple of games where he looked like the old guy but he's fumbling pucks and it looks more like last years Matthews than the 60+ goal guy.

Joshua, Roy, Maccelli (congrats on the first goal) have been very unimpressive additions so far. I already don't like the play style but I don't see anything that suggests this team gets mad and feeds off it.

where the hell are the hits, start a fight, get a sustained cycle....instead we just watch dump and clear the puck hockey

The problem was well before Tre. Dubas overpaid and gave away so many picks for essentially nothing plus sticking with the core for far too long. Whether his choice or upper management it has led us to what I believe will be some sort of a rebuild sooner than later.

What does Matthews have, 2 more years after this one? The team is already mostly old and slow, by that point there won't be anything left to do but sell off assets, collect picks and start over. It's coming fast - they need to figure it out in a hurry.

If what we see from Matthews right now is what we get going forward, then it doesn't matter.

This isn't on Dubas anymore and maybe it never was with the Shannyplan. He was going to trade someone from the core and got the boot. It's been 3 years since Tre took over. Plenty of time for him.
