Nick Petan, Denis Malgin, defending Codi Ceci, constantly trading down, not prioritizing goaltending, building a gigantic analytics dept. that ultimately didn't amount to much. Smart moves and believing you solved a market inefficiency can be two different things.

I don’t see how any of those moves are thinking he’s outsmarting the league anymore than any other GM. It seems like people project things onto him.

Dubas pursued a path to winning that was trying to get ahead of the curve of the NHL's evolution (faster, puck skilled game). His transactions all made sense within that lens. Some of the cheaping out on D and G were related to leaning lots of cap into the top two lines' puck skilled forwards.

By and large it was good and entertaining in the regular season until the playoffs when they don't call penalties the same way and teams can just game plan very specifically to box out a methodical puck possession attack.
