2026-27 General Trades & Signings

I wouldn't have matched if I were the Ducks. Let the Philly cap have trouble paying Carlsson $18m. Trade 1 of the Philly 1st round picks to bring in Pettersson?

I don't know how you keep Verbeek after that level of mismanagement.
I'd understand if they really low balled him but the the Ducks reportedly offered around 13M. That's more then fair for a 67 point guy. Just for comparison. Marner had 94pts in his 3rd year and signed his next deal at 13.3% of the cap. That same percentage would be around $13.9M today.

I think this was a case of player/agent taking it into RFA and seeing what happens.

He was willing to sign a $9M extension last year.

As soon as your best players are making ~$18m, it puts a definite crunch on what's left over for the other 20 or so guys to share.

That's why I'm wondering how this goes over in the dressing room, and add to that if and when the Kreiders and Killorns have to be moved out.

It's also not a great look coming off a 67 point season, imo.

It's definitely an issue in terms of roster construction. Leaf fans know this all too well.

I'm trying (but not that hard) to come up with examples where it was better to wait until the RFA/UFA status was obtained
vs siging as soon as possible (ie the 1 year out). Certainly now with the hyper-inflation that will occur it was always better to get them signed
before they start getting close to July 1.

He was coming off a 45pt season.
Hindsight is great.

I'm trying to think of a reason Carlsson and his agent would turn down the Ducks offer of reportedly $13 million per season and let his status reach RFA.

With reportedly four other teams tendering offer sheets, it sounds to me like his agent was aware this would be the case by letting Carlsson go to RFA.
