2025-26 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

Main issues for the Leafs in the early goings on the stat sheet are just symptoms of inconsistent execution and disjointed chemistry, in my opinion.

There’s enough talent, there’s plenty of effort. Some guys gotta learn how to lay the dump-in more advantageously (consult with the D and Goalies on where they hate to retrieve pucks from), and some guys gotta learn when to step on the gas and when to ease up for an opportunity.

Systems-wise they might need to tweak some of the PK triggers on when to attack the carrier, and PP Rielly needs to either be told or take the initiative to carry into the zone if the PK is selling out on the drop.

Then it’s a matter of gelling and calibrating the right intensity level to practice for the playoffs while pressing at the right moments to win games.
 
A couple things I've noticed from the 3 games I've watched:

  • Robertson is buzzing. While he's generally "always buzzing", he seems to be playmaking a little more and seeing the ice better.
  • Domi and McMann also seem to be really gelling with Robertson. I really like that 3rd line.
  • Maccelli is going to leave us wanting more. Hopefully the flashes of brilliance followed by periods of invisibility become fewer as the season progresses
  • Rielly is playing the fastest I've seen him play in years. Not just skating. His puck movement. His jumping into the rush. His reading of plays.
  • Cowan looks real good on that first line. He has excellent vision. I'd like to see him start shooting instead of defaulting to Matthews
  • Nylander/Matthews seem to be waking up. I loved seeing how much Nylander loved Matthews scoring that OT winner. Good to see a real excitement out of a player who's not the most emotional.
  • Stolarz should win an award for last night's performance.

Robertson makes a lot of nice passes. I think that part of his gane is underrated. Hope L3 can start getting more rewarded for their work.
