Wonder what Dubas has up his sleeve here. Something's coming.

Trading Engvall to save 350k?
Engvall is waiver exempt for 15 more games so they don't have to get rid of him. Same with Joey Anderson

Engvall? s salary isn?t completely buriable though... anything over 950 (or something like that) counts against the cap.

$175k of his cap hit would still count in the minors.

Maybe this means they don?t think they can sign Mikheyev?  He is going back to Russia?

According to this, Vesey just sounds bad. A depth signing who shouldn?t really be able to make a decent roster.

I remember when he was a college free agent and Leafs tried to woo him by hiring his dad and we had his shittier brother Nolan Vesey

I don't think a depth signing has anything to do with Mikheyev.

He has a track record of scoring goals in a 3rd line role from his Rangers days and that's something that almost nobody in our bottom-6 did last season. Even if the rest of his game is meh if he can get back to those numbers he'll fill a pretty big need. If he can't then he'll be off to the Marlies and his loss will be someone from there's gain.

To expand on this a little bit, during his last 2 seasons with the Rangers his goals/60 at 5-on-5 was 0.81 and that was top-100 in the league over those 2 seasons. Last season only Matthews, Nylander, and Hyman scored at a higher rate than that at 5-on-5 (and surprisingly enough the Goat but that's a sample size issue). 0.81 was the same rate Tavares scored goals at last season. That number dropped to 0.61 with Buffalo which isn't super great (still higher than Marner, Kerfoot, and Johnsson) but obviously the hope here is that'll rebound.

If he can get back to a 15 or better goals per year on the third line he will have been well worth it. He draws penalties and was a plus 12 last year.

MLHS: He disappears for long stretches of time.  Sounds like exactly what we don't need occupying a place in the bottom 6.

At first look this guy and Joey Anderson seem pretty sketchy adds.

Why is Anderson sketchy? He sounds like a hard working kid that plays a 200 foot game.

Players playing for near league minimum are paid that way for a reason...

I mean, surely we could have added Taylor Hall or something! This off-season stinks. Dubas stinks.

Remember how last offseason we stocked up on Shore and Agostino and Gravel etc and it was clear most of them would just be AHL call-ups?

What?s confusing for some is that we are hearing a lot of NHL names come in (that sort of suck in some way) but can?t quite fathom that a lot of them also call-up depth depending on how training camp shakes out. Of the bottom 6/pair options, only Simmonds, Engvall, and Kerfoot impact the cap after an AHL loan.

The cap crunch actually helped push more talent down the pay ladder and the Leafs are taking advantage because they can do one-way deals all day; some players even got a firsthand look at the AHL level facilities here (if there is an AHL season at all). It will be a compressed season either way and having a lot of hungry subs goes a long way to keeping the team competitive and ready for potential injuries.

What Zach Hyman (and every Crosby winger) shows is that a hard working puck fetcher can make bank just by smartly freeing pucks up for more skilled linemates. Go to the hard ice with your stick down at the right time and good things happen. Both top left wings are open to suggestion.
