No idea if this best belongs in here, or ex-Leafs, or among podcast discussions, but Connor Carrick is starting a podcast on Friday.  I've always heard good things about his hockey insights.

The Leafs were loosely linked to Grigorenko earlier. With a flat cap though even giving him $1.2mil probably would have been tough unless it came with a Johnsson trade or something. I hope he does well though, I'm always down for a good come back story.

I'm pretty surprised an agent (Milstein!) and team GM/office couldn't tell the difference between a UFA and an undrafted ELC free agent.

Anyone else feel like they shouldn't do any sort of draft lottery until we know what they do about the suspended season? In a normal season the "reward" for teams being good and well run is getting to compete for the cup. The consolation prize for being bad is better draft position.

But if you are forced to cancel the reward for the good teams, it strikes me as crazy to maintain the reward for the bad teams. Then the only teams to really benefit from the season are the bottom feeders.

I think once they go ahead with the draft/lottery they need to just come out and admit that the season is done as well. I think it was Friedman who brought this up but if they do the lottery/draft now and finish the season later it's entirely possible that the team who picks 1st overall could also win the Stanley Cup this season. The draft is also typically a big trading event too. A team like the Leafs could potentially lose value on cap dumps like Johnsson since they obviously can't trade him for draft picks if there's still a chance the season could resume later.

Also, what happens on July 1st when a lot of players' contracts expire? I mean the easy answer is "everyone agrees to extend the end date of contracts until later" but what about players who aren't in the playoffs on expiring deals and want to figure out where they are going to play next season? Do they have to wait until September for free agency to open?

I can get with this.

I think then it should be a 31 team lottery...whatever screws over Ottawa I'm good with.

Imagine the Leafs got a top 5 pick out of this and Ottawa picked like 27th.  That would be very enjoyable.

I can't imagine watching a Stanley Cup final in late July/early August. Heard Bettman's talk with MacLean and all the options the NHL is looking at.  I suppose everything has changed in society right now so anything is possible but man, that would be weird. Might benefit Matthews who is used to hot weather though  8)

Yeah, I caught that too. I assume it's in reference to trades, etc., rather than draft strategy, but it came across as quite odd because of the phrasing. It should probably say "draft day decisions."
