Dreger : Leafs actively looking for another top forward.
« on: September 30, 2011, 07:11:01 PM »
Quote
from Darren Dreger of TSN,

Aside from the few decisions remaining, Toronto is keenly interested in adding another top forward.

The Leafs lack experience up front and are in the market for a player with some size and a track record of making an impact.

The Leafs are willing to sacrifice two younger guys to make this deal happen, but see nothing imminent and predict such a player won’t spring free until at least November when teams have had a chance to assess their talent, or have stumbled out of the gate.

If I had to bet, I'd say Gunnarson and Kadri + a pick are being shopped as a package.

A guy I can't help but feel this reflects on is Lupul.

I think there is a question mark on him still given his injury history.

I also think they feel they are short on top six options outside of the projected top six they have, who outside of Kessel all realistically have questions marks as to whether they can achieve/maintain top six production.

Adding another bonafide top six player would be a very good idea.

I'm not sure this report really tells us much that we haven't known all summer. I mean, it's been fairly well known that Leafs have been looking to improve their forward group since April, and that Connolly wasn't enough to stop that pursuit.

The Leafs officially have been in 'wait and see mode' since free agency according to management.  This is the first serious indication that they are 'actively' looking for help again.

Well, sure, except that they're still in wait and see mode. Nothing about this article says they're actively looking, just that they'd like to add another top 6 forward and that, maybe, in November, they'll be able to. In fact, it specifically says this:

Toronto intends on being patient, but ready to make an upgrade when the right player comes along.

If that doesn't say they're still waiting to see what might become available, I don't know what does.

Keenly interested kind of suggests that they are actively pursuing their options, he says what may hold up this move is that other teams are still waiting to see what they have.

As I just added to my other post, the article concludes with this:

See I got the quote from Kukla's Corner who didn't publish that last part, that makes more sense, thanks.

Looks like Kukla decided to post pretty much everything relevant other than that one, discussion killing line. I wonder why? :P

I question Lupul's top-6 value and wonder about Connolly to.  Kadri and Komi for Spezza. :)

Just listening to the radio on the way in to work this morning and apparently the Oilers lost three defensmen due to injury last night.. They did not say who or how serious the injuries were.... With Gardiner looking so good and Gunnarsson looking to be the odd man out (mostly due to his very movable contract.) Do you see anything of suitable return in Edmonton?

How do you mean?
