Peter Granberg has been recalled by the #leafs.

There was talk of Franson potentially having an injured hip.

Injured hip, eh? It wouldn't be the dumbest idea to keep him off the ice if they have something brewing for Franson.

They're on the road for the next couple games, so, it's likely that they wanted a 7th defenceman around for those more than an injury of any significance.

I figured it was interconnected if a D is banged up it's more imperative to have a 7th with the team.  If he wasn't banged up they're not traveling far (and neither are the Marlies) so probably wouldn't have been as necessary.

But it doesn't really matter why.

Don't mean to keep harping on this but they sent Frattin down to the Marlies to find his mojo.
Looks like he found it 15 goals in 30 games, 5 in his last 4.
Sounds like he is looking for another shot. Why not team him with Kadri for a few games and see what happens?

Because the Marlies are actually in a playoff race and need him more than the Leafs?

He's always scored pretty well at the AHL level, and that's never really translated to the NHL. I wouldn't take this as an indication of him "getting his mojo back." This is just who he is - an AHL sniper and a marginal NHLer.

Might be a better indicator of how well the one who's setting him up is doing.

Supposedly he has found his wrist shot that made him interesting in the first place. If he is willing to hit everyone who moves (like he did in his best stint with the Leafs) and can pot 20 a season then he can play on my 3rd line.

He's 27 and hasn't even scored 20 goals in his NHL career. It's extremely unlikely he'll ever score 20 in a single NHL season.

Thats cause he was injured just as he was on a tear at the beginning of that season when he was on track for at least 20. Once injured his mojo was gone gone gone.
Looks like he may have it back.
Always had a soft spot for the kid I guess.  Great story about him leaving the booze for his career.

He had a brief, unsustainable hot streak that was going to cool off, injury or not. Maybe he hits 20 that year, but, it was equally likely that he doesn't. Those few weeks are the only time he's ever shown any indication of being able to be a legitimate offensive contributor. The rest of his career is much more telling. It's not about "mojo," it's about his actual playing ability. Like I said, he's always been a good AHL goal scorer. That fact that he still is doesn't mean anything other than he's still a good AHL goal scorer.

I understand what you mean and agree. Probably being ruled more by my softspot for him.
At least I would like to see him be given one more solid chance with Kadri and if it doesnt work so be it.  Someone is going to have to come up on deck when some of these trades start materializing, will probably be Kozun and Frattin as they are not going to let Nylander or Brown play on the big team this year.

Softspot, I don't know. Frattin has obvious skills. When he first came up I saw him make some plays that most players can't or won't try. I also saw him knock people down without even trying. Can't remember who it was, but at one point an opposing player took a run at him and Frattin didn't see him until the last moment...opposing guy bounced off him. It was pretty impressive.

Don't know what his problem was, how much was injury, how much may have been lack of motivation, whatever. I think his window of opportunity has largely passed but perhaps he can stick with a team as a third or fourth liner...maybe even with the Leafs for a year or two if they do a total tear down.

I always had hope for Frattin.  Like Chris said, he's really strong on his skates and hard to knock down, and he didn't mind cutting to the net.  But, if he is ever going to have a shot at being a NHL player, you'll kill that hope by bringing him up right now.  Oh, you're starting to feel good about your game?  Welcome to the Leafs.  Prepare to have your soul crushed.

Let him keep rolling in the AHL, and let him get whatever strength/timing/shot/injury/confidence issues he has in check.  No need to break him beyond repair this season.

I like Frattin too, but the real key is he's 27 years old. The team needs to find players with reasonable chances of improving. He's an AHL player who can fill in on the NHL team in case of injuries.

I'd rather have Ashton back. Only 23 with some upside. Realistically, also not probable to amount to anything. But there's some hope there.

Problem is, Ashton has never shown anything in his opportunities. Fratton showed more ability and potential within his first week.

I think you could make a reasonable argument for having traded Frattin instead of Ashton and just leaving Ashton with the Marlies to see if he ever develops, but I'm not going to lose any sleep over that one.
