Former Leafs: Ex-Files / Re: Ex-Leafs: Kaberle's day with the Cup
« on: July 22, 2011, 07:59:10 PM »
I got goosebumps when it was passed to him.  I thought that it was classy, that, although he was just a "rental player" he was still 3rd or 4th to get the cup.

I thought it was classy too, I was thinking he might be down near the end because of his reduced role.

It seems the players really respect those who have put in their time in the league, or perhaps he was really good in the room and his role was bigger than his ice time would indicate.

Typically teams hand the cup off from oldest to youngest.

I'm surprised that this backlash is happening now, when truth be told, he has been uttering this kind of controversial stuff for YEARS now.

I wish I could dig up the old threads, but I remember his borderline racial rants when it came to Charles Wong and in another apparent running schtick, HSBC arena.  I'm surprised he never got called out on that stuff, because it was equally as bad.

I just caught a mosquito with my chest hair.

On second thought, this probably belongs in the commendation thread.

My problem with Wilbur is two-fold,  probably like many who listen to him?

1. He can't get over being axed by the Leafs, so he has to look for every opportunity turn even positives into negatives. LIke an Opposition Leader who can never say anything complimentary about a Governing Party's budget, even if there are some good things. Case in point, Franson. He kept insisting he had to have some kind of defect for Nashville to let the Leafs have him. The inference was that it will eventually prove to be another bad deal. Like it is not possible for the Leafs to make a good deal.

2. He sucks up to his guests on air, and then cuts them down later. Franson is just one example.

I'd agree, and add that his status as an insider of sorts has almost entirely vanished with time.  I really also get the sense he doesn't watch or follow much variety or volume of hockey anymore, other than the Leafs and the big headlines.

But Arlene Bynon...?  Man, 640 is really throwing in the towel on that time slot.

hanging out at his cottage to do some of his radio work remotely and take it easy.

There were a couple of funny times where Dreger was hosting, giving a lengthy opinion, and then he'd throw it over to Watters only to be greeted with dead air.  You could tell Watters was working remotely, and had stepped out of the room for a second while the show was going on.

I doubt Sportsnet would rehire Watters, but a Marek reunion would be good to see.  I hope they have big things planned for Marek.

I think Wilbur was out of the loop on the Franson thing.  I think most had determined that Burke was able to pull that deal because of an insurance issue with Lombardi, but I remember Watters saying something that made it obvious he wasn't aware of that detail.  He wrongly concluded that there must be something wrong with Franson instead.

Main Leafs Hockey Talk / Re: New Alternate Jersey

I like that jersey.

I think that picture doesn't represent it well.

A better representation might be like the one at Keon's ceremony.

I actually kinda like that jersey. It's got some nice retro stylings. Looks really Art-Deco to me.

Whoever was responsible for that jersey did an amazing job staying true to the classic look, while subtly updating the look.  The best part is the perfect shade of blue.

If I'm not mistaken, Keon went on to pot a hat trick that night.  ;D

I figured he would be doomed after TSN radio.

All of his good guests disappeared overnight: McKenzie, Dreger, Ferraro (TSN?), McGuire (yes he was good on the radio).  I subscribe to both podcasts and you could literally see the switch happen.

Slim pickings now on 640, all that's left are the loyalists.  You can only interview Eric Duhatschek so many times in a day.  I miss Ferraro the most, awesome go to guy for the player's perspective.

I like Wilbur and could understand the animosity towards Peddie, but I couldn't figure out the negativity he was slinging Dion's way from the outset.  He definitely seems to have a "take it or leave it" attitude recently.

Kaberle was probably the last player that was connected to his era.

That show has been going downhill since Marek left.  I hope they have big things planned for him at least.

This feels like a JFJ move...trying to get too cute when the evidence suggests otherwise.

There's the "can do" attitude we've been missing for so long!

New site, fresh start?

I like it.   Gets rid of all the Leafs nonsense you people post here, and will have a fresh start to coincide with Ottawa's resurgence.

That'll be enough out of you n00b!   ;)
