This is probably a discussion for another thread but the fact that the Leafs don't have a couple of 21 or 22 year old defensemen who are really knocking on the door for one of those bottom pairing spots represents a real failure on the part of the guys who ran the 2014-2016 drafts.

Liligren and Sandin I say are capable of bottom pairing if given the chance.

Wanted to look at the Leafs cap situation with all these moves today. First, let's assume the roster looks like this (lines can be adjusted, that's not the point of this)

Hyman-Tavares-Marner
Johnsson-Matthews-Nylander
Mikheyev-Keroot-Kapanen
Moore-Shore-Spezza
Petan

Rielly-Dermott
Muzzin-Barrie
Borgman-Ceci
Harpur

Andersen
Hutchinson

For the RFA's, lets say Marner gets $10mil, Ceci gets $4.5mil, and Kerfoot gets $2.8mil (that one's based off Evolving Wild's contract projections). That roster, plus Kessel's retained salary and minus Horton on the LTIR comes to $80.6mil. So just enough to fit in another below $1mil player to be the 23rd guy on the roster (Agostino or Gauthier or Bracco or Marincin or Borgman or Holl or whoever).

Some extra room can come if we just ditch Ceci and replace him with someone at a quarter of that cap hit. Or if we bridge Marner and get an extra couple million. But we're pretty much right at the limit as things stand now.

You think the Leafs traded for a RHD to not play with Rielly?

I feel.like Spezzas should be 4C and Moore deserves to.be Top 9

What's our lives who looking like.now?

Kerfoot at 3C?

I don't know then. It seems crazy that the Leafs could offersheet say Tkachuk at 5 years for 9.5 and the Flames would have to wait until 2021 to even draft.

I read that as pertaining to "They have to be picks for the next draft (2020) unless..."

Right, and the two higher end offer sheet compensations meet that criteria of requiring multiple picks in a round(either 4 1sts or 2 1sts, a 2nd and a 3rd).

So you're saying the Leafs can offer sheet a player and don't even need to give a 2020 1st rounder?

They just give a 2021 and 2022?

I think you're reading that incorrectly or its worded poorly.

From a Sportsnet article a year ago:

Quote
If the compensation demands multiple picks from the same round, the signing team must have the pick in the upcoming draft, and then any additional picks covered in the subsequent years. For instance, if compensation is two first-round picks, the signing team must have its own first-rounder in 2019 and 2020 (since the signing period began July 1, after this year’s draft).

Says in the quote you just posted it has to be their own picks.

Right but also that if the comp includes multiple picks in the same round a team can do it by owning two of their next three picks. The Leafs do own two of their next three firsts.

Seriously, just read the two sentences after what you bolded.

I read that as pertaining to "They have to be picks for the next draft (2020) unless..."

My impression is you need your own teams picks first or it's a nogo.

How are Leafs going to offer sheet a player when they don't have their 2020 first rounder?
This is all based on if Marner signs an offer sheet of 4 1sts.

They have to be your own 1sts. So...Yeah no offer sheet coming from the Leafs.

I don't think that's true:

Quote
The team submitting the offer sheet has to have all of the required compensation picks, and they have to be their own picks. They have to be picks for the next draft (so 2020) unless they are required to have two picks of the same round. Then they can have two of the next three year’s picks to offer.

Rielly is captain next year.

At least he should be.

He's been here a long time but is still young.

Seems to be popular in the dressing room.

One of the better players on the two.

Matthews and Tavares with the As.

Columbus already with 4 pp opportunities with 2 periods played. Lots of interference and stick infractions called. I don't understand why it was decided these rules did not apply to the Leafs this season.

You don't trade Naz. The whole point is having 3 good centres on this team. Reunite Matthews with Nylander. Stick Kappy and Moore with Naz and you will see the poyential.

If I'm Dubas I give Babcock one more year. His coaching seems fine but his lineup choices are baffling. Take away his favourites. I pray to God Marleau is done and there is some agreement there. Get rid of Brown, Zaitsev, Hainsey, Goat.

I mean this has to go down as a disappointment.   Freddy wasn’t good today but the big guns didn’t show up tonight

I think Tavares did.  I think Matthews did.  But 34 can't score from the bench.

Yeah. Bench management is something Babcock needs to fix if he’s going to have playoff success again. Down one going I to the third, top two lines should have been given a lot more time. Special teams are definitely an issue right now - especially the PK and the second PP unit. Need to somehow move Marleau this summer. He’s done.

Yes, Patrick's a wonderful guy, but he's done-done.

Special teams?  The PP should have been great, never was after October.  Never got fixed.  That's just bad coaching.

I am not on the tar-and-feather squad for Babcock, but someone needs to knock some self-entitlement out of him, because he's got some real flaws in how he manages this team.

Seriously. He comes across as a petulant little baby. The whole my way or the highway crap. I don't think it will happen but he really needs to be fired.

Babcock has lost two consecutive Game 7s to the Bruins.  You look at what Trotz has done in his first year. He is too stubborn to make changes on the fly. He's got to go.
