Give Hutch the start.

We need to see if he can handle more starts. And let Andersen ease into November. The less October Freddy starts the better.

Andersen looks like crap.

Just watch him closely. He is really slow at tracking the puck. Like that 3rd goal he allowed against the Blues.

I've got to say I hate watching hockey on TV now.

Hughson and Simpson just suck the fun out of any game.

Then you've got Marek and Friedman. Something about them always comes across as condescending to me.

No fun!

I just put the game on mute now and listen to music.

So are our players just really greedy?

The Leafs have so much money and try to do everything in a best in class kind of way - arena, training facilities, staff, support etc.

Do they have no say at all in the SportsNet on air package? I like TSN a lot. Miller and Ferraro are great. HNIC is reasonable as well. But SN is just awful. Greg Millen is the last person I want to hear from between the benches and the guy calling the game sounds like an amateur. SN is the hockey rights holder for the NHL, yet they have stripped down to a bare bones talent that has little left after Friedman.

Any time a game is broadcast on SN I always watch the opposition feed on

The guy doing the playbyplay is listenable but I 100% agree with you on Millen. He's the worst and I have no idea how he has a job. It's definitely not based on talent. You think they could find some new people to call games and do colour.

Main Leafs Hockey Talk / Re: Auston Matthews

Not too impressed by Matthews in this situation. I say give Rielly the C. Matthews shouldn't put himself in a situation like this, to me it doesn't matter if it is one incident, and then not tell the leafs about is shortely after. If it's true that the guys tried to open the car door, it's quite creepy as well and a really poor judgement. If I were an owner I would probably make sure that everyone understands that if he is named captain now, then someone will be fired. I am proud over Kyle Dubas, over what he is saying, and how he is dealing with the situation.

I think with Rielly entering UFA in a couple if years they won't give it to him. They give him the C it puts them over a barrel when trying to negotiate a new contract.

Tavares makes the most sense.

I found this from the Athletic article to be particular damning

Dozithee also said that a member of the condo board approached her after the incident and told her that if she decided to press charges, the board would support her, because “the resident has been an issue for us anyways.”

It's not a one time thing. They guy has been acting like an entitled rich kid by the sounds of it.

Give Tavares the C.

Yeah the only reason I wouldn't give the captaincy to Matthews now is if he didn't tell the team about this. If he kept it a secret then that's a pretty big deal.

The actual crime he committed although stupid and insensitive in the end wasn't egregious.

The woman was a security guard where Matthews lived so they likely knew each other.  Him being drunk at the time he likely thought it was a funny joke to pull but definitely a bad move.

I hope Marner puts up huge numbers this year because if he doesn't the media and a lot of fans are going to really give it to him.

This is what I hate about sports and the public nature of their salaries.  What Marner makes does not change the type of player he is.

I'll use Bryan McCabe as an example.  He was a pretty good dman for the leafs.  And when he was making 2 million a year everyone loved him.  Then he signs a deal for 5 million a year and certain fans  expect him to win Norris trophy's.  The amount of the contract did not change what he brought to the table.

Now a slight difference in the Marner case is that it's possible that he hasn't reached his ceiling yet.  Still it's not like signing this deal means that Marner is going to start winning Art Ross trophies.

I think it's more because of how the negotiations went and how he clearly demanded to be overpaid and was not fair to the team.

So if he comes out cold to start the season I think fans will turn on him.

I soured on him a little already to be honest. I never felt Nylander was acting unreasonable and Matthews was overpaid considering term but still it's acceptable. Marner has to perform as the 2nd paid highest winger in the league. 60 point season won't cut it. He's put a lot of pressure on himself and I hope he can handle it.

So Goat just took Spezza's spot?

I didn't watch the game. How did Spezza look?

This is probably a discussion for another thread but the fact that the Leafs don't have a couple of 21 or 22 year old defensemen who are really knocking on the door for one of those bottom pairing spots represents a real failure on the part of the guys who ran the 2014-2016 drafts.

Liligren and Sandin I say are capable of bottom pairing if given the chance.

Wanted to look at the Leafs cap situation with all these moves today. First, let's assume the roster looks like this (lines can be adjusted, that's not the point of this)

For the RFA's, lets say Marner gets $10mil, Ceci gets $4.5mil, and Kerfoot gets $2.8mil (that one's based off Evolving Wild's contract projections). That roster, plus Kessel's retained salary and minus Horton on the LTIR comes to $80.6mil. So just enough to fit in another below $1mil player to be the 23rd guy on the roster (Agostino or Gauthier or Bracco or Marincin or Borgman or Holl or whoever).

Some extra room can come if we just ditch Ceci and replace him with someone at a quarter of that cap hit. Or if we bridge Marner and get an extra couple million. But we're pretty much right at the limit as things stand now.

You think the Leafs traded for a RHD to not play with Rielly?

I Spezzas should be 4C and Moore deserves Top 9

What's our lives who looking

Kerfoot at 3C?
