I'm sure PAP will be tested when he's moved to his new team. We await the results.

Elliotte Friedman reporting on Hockey Central at Noon that San Jose has no 1st round pick in the 2016 draft, hence them wanting to hang on to their 2016 2nd round pick. Leafs had the flexibility to slot the 2nd round pick for Polak later, so Lou turned it into two 2nd round picks in 2017 and 2018. A win-win for everyone.

Good Point Nik. Love the pic btw. Franchise cornerstones/elite players are more and more becoming available really only at the top of the draft, barring a Stamkos situation or late-draft magic. I honestly didn't think I'd be having this much fun in year one though. Babs keeps them honest and Lou maximizes the returns.

In the summer pundits were like, 'sure they're saying all the right things, but let's wait and see if they have the discipline to do a proper rebuild / Will fans rock back and forth in the fetal position and defecate' etc. Now it's like, 'yeah... they're uh... they're serious.'

THanks Disco, big laughes in your post. I was almost crying. I even pictured the monkey wearing the Fez ;D

Thanks man, checking in last night I saw Edmonton in 30th because of our games in hand and I'm like 'are you friggen serious? 30th? Again? For the love of Kevin Lowe's back and neck hair.' I mean I want Matthews just as much as the next guy, but sweet mother of baby jesus anyone but Edmonton.

maybe the NHL should move Edms table closer to the stage, so they don't have to walk as far to get there first overall every year.

I was thinking the same thing, just automatically funnel the 1st overall pick directly into their farm system. Dispense with the pleasantries.

Anyways, Connor: see you when you hit 26.

Honestly, Edmonton has to be the worst run franchise since Milbury's New York Islanders. They've been picking top 5 for what, 10 years now? With a bunch of 1st overall picks. A friggen monkey could do better. A literal monkey. Sitting in the president/gm chair. Every year. A literal capuchin monkey.

This year it'll be like 'weee another highly skilled forward. Let's get him in there with McDavid and Hall and Eberle and Nugent-Hopkins and Yakupov and bing and bang and bingbang...' And then just furiously masturbate all year. Does Kevin Lowe have pictures of Daryl Katz playing cards with Satan?

It's called moving some of your assets to BUILD THE REST OF YOUR TEAM.
Honestly. You've got the best young franchise player in the league and you're sharing the basement with a team that has to ice an AHL club every night for the love of peter forsberg.

NHL Draft 2016: 'And congratulations Edmonton Oilers!. Auston Matthews will look great next to Connor McDavid. And also congratulations on being the laughing-stock of the league. The NHL is once again going to modify it's draft structure due to your colossally inept managment. Great job.'

Yeah I like Reimer, having a great season apart from the injury. Super numbers. Apparently he's been working on tracking the puck and I think he's even improved. But does he factor in long-term? Probably not. He deserves Bernier's contract, around $4.5, but I don't think he'll get it.

Lou and Babs will just keep doing what they're doing: pump the tires up and then maximize the return in picks/prospects. Who knows what this team will look like next year, after the deadline and the summer. Or 3 years.

What is fun is that we have something to talk about: a competent rebuild through the draft by experienced management, rather than the annual tradition of miss playoffs/sign and re-sign at inflated prices. Repeat. JFJ. Burke. Nonis.

Anyone missing Phaneuf now?

I don't miss him.

It's obvious to me now, that if he's not good enough to pull the Senaturds out of their funk, then, he is well overpaid as I have thought all along.  I think he's only worth about $4-$5M tops.

I'm glad we dumped him without any retention!

I certainly echo your comments.

Even Kypreos, last week, said that it was clearly the case that he was never a "game changer", and his years in Toronto confirmed that point.

I don't think even his ardent supporters might think that he will make a difference in Ottawa making the playoffs or not.  But again, by all accounts he is a classy guy, who was good to the younger players.  (But, again, any tortured debates about his arguable talent, penalties, etc. should really now be on the Ottawa Senators fan sites). :)

Agreed. Dion's got some skills, but it's completely obvious now that he is MASSIVELY overpaid, which is a serious issue in a hard-cap league.

I remember thinking that when Nonis re-signed him to stick around. Any defenceman making 7 million should never, ever be gotten around like Dion has on the rush. Lou got the job done: jettisoned that albatross of a contract and got a pick and a prospect.

We're seeing more and more guys getting buyed-out/shipped-out not because they're not decent players and can't still contribute, but because their bloated contracts can handcuff a team for years.

Pre-cap era Rangers or Leafs would overpay and we'd be like: 'meh, not my money'. Post-cap era is now like: 'yeah... that money's gonna be better spent elsewhere.'

I don't see Stamkos not testing the free agent waters on July 1st, his no-trade allows that. He'll make more, he can still choose Tampa. And if someone makes him an offer he can't refuse: max dollars/happy with coach/chance to win... Maclean said it, July 1st he has all the leverage. On the CBA/Lightning for allowing a superstar to reach un-restricted free agency at 26.

That implies that Tampa has the option to not allow him to reach free agency.

They could have before this year. Or 2 years ago, long-term, max dollars. They obviously chose not to lack him up. You're right, if a player is looking forward to 26 no matter what, they can't stop it. The CBA allows free-agency earlier now.
