Is Carlyle coaching this game? Being outshot 2-1 versus a superior team and yet tied 4-4.

Wow, intermission analysis of the top line. That third (I think) Ranger goal where, in sequence, Bozak then Kessel then JVR basically just waved at the puck carrier as he went by. That's embarrassing.

Still think a 1st for Franson is a pipe dream and I'm more than interested to see what kind of returns Nonis is able to get come the deadline.
So if he's getting the green light to blow it up does that mean he won't be fired this summer after all?

I don't think he has green light to blow it up. He has the green light to make the straightforward, obvious moves of shipping out pending UFAs for picks/prospects. Unless we see the Leafs make a major move before he's let go, I'll continue to expect to see him replaced before the draft.

Did he not put price tags on the whole core minus JVR?
What happens if no offers come close to what he's asking for?
I'd think at this point, everyone on the team is available and has a price tag except for Rielly. He's the only player I wouldn't want to see traded. The rest can all go if the price is right.

That SHG began with Kessel losing a puck battle to Kreider. I guess one shouldn't expect Kessel to win that battle, but where was the help?

Good effort there from Bozak and Kessel. When does that line get broken up?

I know they signed him hoping to get a bargain/reclamation type result, but it didn't really work out. Not a terrible deal, but they could have gotten as much or more out of a rookie for half the price.

That's why we need to trade Franson. Yikes.

Bozak could be the next guy to sit out as far as I'm concerned...though I suspect as a likely trade candidate, he needs to play.

Come on, the Ashton/Broll for nothing deal wasn't satisfying enough for you? :)

I know we're all itching for the trigger to be pulled, but I'd rather they take their time and make the best deals possible. Besides, the current roster should be able to resume the losing streak now that we'll be playing teams not named Edmonton.

Yeah, I don't know if he would have been an impact player otherwise.

As for Kukemberg, at least he wasn't taken until the 4th round. Still, the Leafs could have had Ryan Callahan, who was taken 13 picks later.

If you want to see a real "swing and a miss" from 2003, the Rangers first round pick, Hugh #12 played a grand total of 2 NHL games.

It's always fun to look back at old drafts. For overall ineptness, it would be tough to top the Leafs 1999 class...9 selections (led by Luca Cereda) who played a total of 3 NHL games. 1996 would have rivaled that (with #1 pick Marek Posmyk) except for the hidden gem at @204 (Kaberle).

I thought Clarkson handled the interview OK. Yes, he could have put more of the blame on himself or said he would work harder, but at least he didn't resort to "you think this (losing streak) is my fault?"

As for the relative value of him versus Smith...yes, I realize Smith is a center :) and also a more effective defensive player. But I don't necessarily agree that those attributes give him the edge. I think Clarkson has been misused to some extent...he obviously doesn't belong on the PP but on the 4th line. And Booth has been terrible all year. Yes he looked great last night, but come was Edmonton. Let's see how he looks against the Rangers.

Panik should definitely be in the lineup over both Clarkson and Booth (and Smith).

It's an interesting situation with Clarkson. I mean, he is what he is - I don't think the issue is lack of effort, it's just that he's not all that talented. And it's not (entirely) his fault that he was signed to that big contract.

So what is the benefit to sitting him out in favor of Smith? Does Smith bring more to the team? I don't think so. So was the benching a way to send a message that results matter, regardless of contract status? If so, perhaps it would be more effective to have benched Kessel or Bozak or JVR. I know we won the game, but it was Edmonton. The Marlies might have been able to beat them.

I could see sitting him in order to give a young player a shot, or if he is about to be traded (one can dream, right?)...but not clear about the motivation here. Guess we'll know more after the next few games against better teams.

Hey everyone, figured since I've started spewing my opinions around the forum, I'd give a brief intro. I've been reading here for several years but the Carlyle firing (which I've been hoping for) finally convinced me to start posting.

I grew up near New York City so as you might expect, my parents (and uncles, grandparents, etc) were all Ranger fans. Well, until the Islanders came around, at that point my Mom and sister switched allegiance which made for some really fun times (Ranger-Islander games in the late 70s/early 80s were the most intense hockey I've ever seen). I have no idea how I wound up a Leaf fan. Perhaps it was my first act of youthful rebellion? In any case, since I was born in 1962 the Leafs have technically won a Cup during my lifetime, but I don't remember it.

Among my group of friends, we had Ranger, Islander, Bruin, Flyer, Penguin and Red Wing fans. They've all seen their teams win at least one Cup. I'm still waiting.

I still live in NY state and still watch the Leafs. It's like a sickness that I can't shake. I'm hoping for a total tear-down and rebuild but I don't think the organization has the stomach for that. I think it's more likely that several pieces of "the core" are moved and one or two are kept...probably Kessel but who knows. The fact that they decided to fire Carlyle despite the fact the team was still in a playoff position gives me hope that maybe someone in the organization "gets it".

I don't know what else to say, so I'll leave it at that!

I think the most likely scenario is that Bozak and maybe Phaneuf are gone by the deadline, and Kessel stays least until the summer. Kessel may get traded before the draft but I think it's just as likely they keep him and try to put together a better supporting cast (especially a real #1 center).

I think my preference would be for all of them to go and start building around Rielly and maybe Kadri, but I highly doubt the Leafs are willing to tear it down completely.
