Is this the long-awaited Vesey-free game? Though I have to admit, if he's on the 4th line I really don't mind it too much. He's an OK 4th liner who can do some PK.

Great shift by the Engvall line.
Despite the lack of scoring, Mikheyev is looking more assertive and confident with the puck. Like last year before the injury.

3
Helluva play by Spezza. Leafs were starting to spend a lot of time in their zone so that feels like a big goal.

See this is what I'd like to see on a more nightly basis. Riding guys out, taking the body. They don't need to crush anyone but take them out of the play.

All 4 lines are playing well.
Missed the first period but like what I'm seeing in the second, especially with AM out. Surprised to see Vesey in the lineup.

Matthews-Nylander-Marner next game?
I was thinking about that earlier today. Give Tavares a line where he can be the main guy, maybe with Hyman on one side and...I don't know, Barabanov on the other? (edit to add, maybe Kerfoot would be the best option) I know people seem hesitant to break up Matthews/Marner but maybe that OT switch should be tried for the next game. Something is needed to get Tavares going.

Maybe having Vesey and Boyd on the Matthews unit isn?t a good idea.  Matthews is getting no space and neither guy has the skill to feed it around the ice.  I don?t care for these units
I'd like to see the stacked unit (Matthews, Marner, Tavares, Nylander, Hyman, Rielly) and leave them out for a minute and a half. And work on the zone entries and puck battles, they are losing way too many puck battles when they should be able to outnumber the defenders.
Oops I guess that's one too many but maybe they should pull the goalie...gotta get some goals.

Small sample size here (he's only taken 37 face-offs this season) but his win percentage is 51.4%, up from 39.1% in 105 face-offs last season.
I think Engvall is going to be a fixture as the 3rd line C. I think Kerfoot stays where he is for now with JT until Galchenyuk is ready to go.
Agree. I think it's obvious that Kerfoot is much better at LW. Engvall has the skills to be a good center if given a run there I think.

Galchenyuk...I'm not holding out much hope for him but maybe he can push Vesey out of the lineup, at least until Robertson is ready (which may not be this year).

Tavares is really starting to get on my nerves.

17 points on the season is nice and all, but not once this year has he dominated a game.

His already average skating looks to be worse than it was.

It would be nice if he looked like an 11 million dollar player every few games.

Nylander has been utterly skewered again by the media and yet Jonny Taranna gets a free pass.

I'm just going off body language, but I don't think Matthews and Marner like the guy. They seem to like to have fun and maybe Tavares is too serious? He doesn't seem right. Something's up mentally that is really affecting his game.
Not sure how much is mental and how much might be physical but he is definitely not playing like the John Tavares we signed. If this is what we get going forward, the Leafs are in big trouble.

As much as I?d like him to be successful, I just don?t see Barabanov as a legitimate NHL player at this point.
Who really knows? He showed something tonight but like most of the team, nothing clicked. Give him the same opportunity Vesey got early in the year and see what he can do.

11
was there a purpose to that PP? I couldn't see what they were trying to accomplish. Matthews never really in shooting position.

Oh well, on to the next game.

12
What a frustrating game. I will say that I think Barabanov is showing some ability here and deserves some more ice time.

13
that play to nylander doesn't seem to be working maybe stop doing it?

14
golden opportunity right here

need to make this pp count
