I believe the next moves will come one month in. all we will need is some minor tweeking. i believe this team will compete with the best all season.

I think the Leafs have done enough to make the playoffs this year.

Firing the coaches. Special teams addressed. I especially like Scott Gordon. Looking forward to agressive pressure in the offensive zone.
Connolly. Like him or not, he pushes the entire center ice down a notch, and gives the Leafs a one-two punch of Lupul/Connolly/Kessel - MacArthur/Grabovski/Kulemin
Armstrong. The stats with him in the lineup speak for himself. Here's hoping he can avoid another freak injury.
Liles. Leafs needed another shooter on the PP. They got one.
Franson. Will he push Komisarek to the PB if Mike can't get his game together?

Leafs have done some things right, and I'm not as bent on needing a miracle from Reimer to pull it off.  Better coaching, improved special teams, and depth in scoring all fall on the forwards.

This will be a better year, IMO.

well put Ken, and its nice to see someone post somthing other then the doom and gloom plain jane crap. i think this years team will be much improved, and even better then the second half team we saw last season. i'll bet they open some eyes up.

General Rumours & Speculation / Re: Leafs looking into Mike Green?
« on: August 09, 2011, 09:00:28 PM »
that "writer" said the Leafs "upgraded dramatically" over the summer.  Hell, even I don't think they upgraded "dramatically"

Not even nutman thinks they've upgraded dramatically.

I 2nd that. i think we took a small step up, but if the gamble pays off it could be a sweet season. oops i'm back sorry i sliped, i think we got better but not by much, and that is where i am at. but upgraded dramatically, nope.

I thought a bit about this last night over the latest issue of THN and reluctantly I have to conclude that we are still a longshot to make it in.  Foundationally, Reimer has to keep it up -- a tall order in itself.  The D has to gel; of that, I'm actually fairly confident.  But the forwards, the forwards:  slice it and dice it anyway you want, but it's still pretty much a piece of Swiss cheese -- many holes.  If Lombardi and/or Connolly can miracle-ize....  But less than that, we'd have to see continued improvement on many fronts, of a magnitude that only our esteemed friend nutman can conjure up.

I can't believe I'm saying this but I kinda miss the dude haha.

Was just talking about the boys in blue over a beer last night ,and the jersey fan i was talking to agrees that the leafs are looking very good, and if the goaltending holds up  we should not have a problem getting in the playoffs. i feel the same. so i hope this little energy boosts helps.

Replying to the title "is Burke finished" I don't think he will ever be finished. No matter what time of the year, if there is a deal that can be done that in his assessment will improve the team he's going to jump on it.

yes we heard that a few posts ago, but the question is..... is he done for now.

Main Leafs Hockey Talk / Re: Overpaid Leafs
« on: July 24, 2011, 10:12:11 AM »
I don't think Kessel is overpaid.

'87 Kessel 5-10 178lbs $5.4 MIL  13/14
82  32  32  64  -20  24pims

'86 Kulemin 6-1  225lbs  $2.35 MIL  11/12
82  30  27  57  +7  26pims

'84 Grabovski 5-10 180lbs $2.9 MIL 11/12
81  29  29  58  +14  60pims

How much is hard hitting, defensively responsible, high scoring Kulemin worth next summer?  Grabovski the following summer?  I believe that both are more complete players than Kessel.

I actually messed up the dates on Grabovski.  He is also done this year.  Even if Kulemin and Grabovski only match last years numbers I can't see them getting less than Lupul's $4.3 MIL especially with what they bring as players compared to Kessel.

Next summer Toronto has $20 MIL in cap space and that is without Schenn's contract which I can't see being less than $3.5 MIL especially when rugged defensive defenceman Orpik makes $3.75 MIL.

So my estimation is with $20 MIL the Leafs need to account for:
Schenn $3.75
Kulemin $4.5 rfa
Grabovski $4.5 ufa
That is $12.75 MIL before any other free agents are re-signed that are decent

Liles $4.0 ufa (or is he traded to make room for Gardiner $1.1 MIL)
Gustavsson $1.8?? ufa (Reimer deal)
Franson $2.5??  rfa (Anton Babchuk deal)
Aulie $2.5??  rfa
Frattin $1.5?? rfa (Bozak deal?

Equals $21 MIL without Liles or Gardiner.

That means we could possibly be at the Cap ceiling which I would have expected to translate into Stanley Cup contender.  INSTEAD the Leafs are without an elite center (or even forward), no proven goalie and missing the playoffs for 6 years.

Having such a high payroll and no playoffs makes me assume that some players somewhere on the Leafs payroll HAVE TO BE overpaid.

lololololol...

I did not like the leafs we had early on in the season last year but after the moves  Burke made, and now the off season moves i am thinking we are in much better shape going in and if we keep up the pace we showed in the last half we should be in a very good spot come playoffs.

yes i am positive but way over positive  no. i just point out the good in our team not the bad like a few on here consistanly do. i know we like all teams have weak spots but i choose to point out the strong spots and we have lots of them at this point.

I believe these two will set
Burke back a few coins. Kulemin more so.

nutman makes me want to hate the Leafs...  I think I finally understand why some other fan bases hate the Leafs and their fans...

And whys that, because i am on the positive side. i think thats better then being morbid and so down on your team that all you think is the worst.

1751
My opinion is that we are young and for all we know we may just have that guy in our system already, i think its a wait and see thing. also we dont need one great player and a bunch of clowns, because we saw how that worked out the last few years. i like the way we are now, no great player but a whole lot of very good players.  we are better than most on these boards will admit.

I think he is doing the right thing sitting in a holding pattern until the season gets going.

Didn't he say he'd jump any any opportunity to improve the team? I'm not sure I want a GM with a "holding pattern" feature.
I would think he wants to the see players fight for  that spot in camp then the chemistry factor before he pulls the trigger again.

I think thats what his plan seems to be. i think it will be one of the best camps in years, and we may see a job or two taken away by a rookie.
