Absolutely love this deal. Two years in a row the Leafs have made a major splash on July 1. That's fun.

Main Leafs Hockey Talk / Re: Mitch Marner: what now?
« on: June 22, 2019, 11:47:39 PM »
That would certainly apply to those teams that have a pending FA at the level of Marner.  But they wouldn't be the ones tempted to do an OS anyway.

No, because as people have mentioned there was an excellent chance that the Leafs were going to match on Marner no matter what. The real consequence of opening up the RFA market will be for the mid-tier guys whose leaving via offer sheet wouldn't return all that much pick wise. Kapanen or Johnsson, for instance, would have been very vulnerable to that if the RFA market was alive.

I think your imaginary team that has a ton of cap space, a willingness to lose 4 firsts and no potentially tricky RFA negotiations on the horizon just doesn't exist.

I agree 100% on all points.  That's why, when we switch from Speculation Land to the real world, dumping Marleau's contract doesn't make much difference one way or the other with respect to Marner.  An OS to a superstar isn't likely in the first place.

It does provide the Cap Space to sign Marner and help fill out the roster.  We will probably get both of Kap and Johsson for Marleau's Cap.

I hope so.  Still, both of those moves address the front end, which isn't where the team's biggest weakness is.  If Zaitsev really is considered a liability (which I don't entirely buy) there's going to have to be some cleverness applied to the blueline.
I don't think Zaitsev goes for cheap. He played well with Muzz in the playoffs. I think we'll see Rosen and Liljegren up with the big club as our bottom pairing to start. Dermott can play the right side when he gets back. We also have Borgman on the Marlies and from the games I saw, I really liked him. He's tough, has some offensive flair and gets the puck out quickly. Sandin is a def lonshot but never say never. The kid is very smart.
Last I heard on the subject, (grain of salt, because I didn't see much of the Marlies myself) Sandin has leapt ahead of Liljegren on the prospect chart.

It looks like the Leafs just traded out of the 208 spot?
Looks like it. Later in this round plus an extra late pick next year maybe? Whatevs, I guess.

I love the rumoured deals for both Kapanen and Johnsson. Two top six forwards who are similar but also bring different weapons for $7M combined. That's a win.

Anyone still watching this? I'm kinda hoping Daniil Gutik continues his free fall and the Leafs take him. Big kid, highly skilled by most accounts, but can't skate for beans, apparently. Maybe Barb can remedy that?

Gretzky's records are safe for another year.

I like the pick and I love that they gained an extra pick to grab the guy they wanted.

I also enjoy that the Leafs actually have picks in the draft. What fun.

Ugh...

Anyway, bye JVR, bye Uncle Leo. I'd bring Bozak back on a sweetheart deal, like $2M a year, which I doubt he'd do, so goodbye to him too, I guess.

Gardiner's performance in this game was horrible, which I'm sure has been documented in the gameday thread... And a complete flop from Andersen was unforunate too.

At least they probably saved money on Nylander for the next three years. They need to sign a real defenceman and at least one real defensive foward.

Other than that... that sucked. I work nights, so I PVR everything and work my balls off to avoid the score. When it was 5-4 Bruins, I just fast-forwarded to the inevitable end. Bruins were the better team all series and they deserved to win in a lot less than seven games.

The Leafs best players (outside of Freddie and Marner) have yet to be their best players.

Tonight is the night. Go Leafs Go!

Still way too many brutal turnovers for my liking and it seemed (at least for a while there, not sure of the final stats) they were getting eaten alive in the faceoff circle, especially in their own end. Should Bozak just take every draw possible against Bergeron from now on?

Marner was sensational again and has been by far the most dangerous Leaf in the series, but Freddie Andersen's performance, particularly in the first period, was the difference-maker again.

A Bruins fan friend of mine was telling Leafs fans on Facebook to post "Mercy" and he wouldn't make fun of them for the rest of the series and some people actually did. Oh how I hope this comes back to bite him!

Scorching hot take: Andersen needed to steal Game 5, now Matthews/Nylander have to steal Game 6.

Actually, we might still need Andersen to stand on his head anyway.

OK, so it's a little ironic that what was supposed to be a light, stress-free thread to allow people to just basically vent about the team without being told they're wrong because "math" has turned into some kind of state of the union thing, and that was never my intention. Nor was it my intention to insult any fellow posters.

Like I said, a post I saw about how it was a pretty sparse thread for a playoff game just made me think, and it made me consider why I don't post as often as I used to. And a lot of it was simply because these days, if you post an opinion, you better have the numbers to back up every possible situation, when sometimes all people want is to watch the game and express what they see in front of them at any given time.

Maybe they're right, maybe they're wrong, and expressing follow-up opinions is fine and welcomed, but it's like, when your wife/husband/whatever vents to you about their day, they don't want solutions. They want someone to listen. And if a conversation develops based on that, it's all good.

Again, the whole point was to provide a thread that was loose, like a chat in a bar, without it becoming like doing homework for an hour before you feel like you can post an opinion. I appreciate both sides of it, really, and I have no problem with those more in-depth discussions when I'm in the mood. But not everyone wants to research what (and just using him as an hypothetical here, for the record I think he's playing great) Gardiner's Corsi Close is in the last five minutes of a game on a defensive zone draw when they watch him make a bad play and vent about it.

This was never meant to alienate or attack anyone, it was simply meant to include everyone who wanted to just shoot the "stuff" about the team casually, the old (though I hate the term) eyeball-test conversations, I guess. I tried to be as careful as I could with the wording of the initial post so that would be clear, and in no way hostile, but I guess I wasn't careful enough.

Anyway, Go Leafs Go?

As I posted in the thread that dare not speak its name, I thought we needed Andersen to steal one, and he did. It's up to Matthews and Marner to hold serve at home now. I wish I could include Nylander in that, but he's been invisible. Maybe this is the moment he steps up?

And really guys, yes, the officiating was frustrating, but only one call was dubious. Leafs have to tread carefully in that area in Game 6.

Also, God love Tyler Bozak. Just before he scored I said outloud to myself, "We need Bozak to get a breakaway." It wasn't a breakaway, but damn if this guy doesn't score big goals when he gets a shot. I really hope he takes a discount to stay.

Casual take: The Leafs need Andersen to steal this game tonight. Like, bona fide larceny of a game.

Then they head back home and Matthews finally has a breakout game, sending it to Game 7.

Fingers crossed, I guess.

I miss the writing of Mirtle, Siegel, LeBrun, etc... and I definitely get the business model. I'm not paying for it though, until the Leafs are a team worth paying (even more) to follow.

It's close though, it's very close.
