They can’t even cross the border can they?  Will have to play playoffs in Canada or USA

General Rumours & Speculation / Re: Armchair GM 2019-2020

I'd love to see Dubas get bold.  Maybe JT for Petry and Domi.  Things need to get shook up a bit in the top 6.

Just something to remember: from November 20th to February 3rd the Leafs had the 3rd best record in the entire NHL. That's over a 1/3 of the season and was literally just over 2 weeks ago. Even if you include this past 2 week stretch where they've struggled they still have the 6th best record in the league since Keefe was hired.

They played like dogshit last night. No other way around that. If that game occurred 38 games into the season it'd be easier to just shake off because of how the previous 37 went. But because of what happened before November 20th the Leafs don't have any rope left to hang themselves and I obviously get why people are reacting to last night like they are.

Still, all they need to do to make it to the playoffs is be better than the friggin' Florida Panthers. And if they get back to that Nov.20-Feb.3rd type of play they'll be a very dangerous team to face in the playoffs.

Considering Freddie's stats (worst save percentage among any goalie with 10+ games in 2020), I don't know how you couldn't go with a "win and you're in" mentality with the goalies going forward. And it's Campbell's turn now.

How many regulation wins do they have in 2020?  How can a team ranked near the top in goals against be one of the best?  Until these clowns learn to play structured, defensive hockey with some emotion they will continue to suck

You can say that you don't buy it, but do you have a suggestion as to how they could have gotten out from Zaitsev's long term deal without taking something like Ceci in return?
That was Dubas fixing Lou's mistake. He also had to fix Lou's mistake with Marleau. The whiners  need to give it a rest. Those were 2 major black holes for this team last summer. We were all shocked when he got rid of both. We knew CC was the Zaitsev equivalent but we only have him for 1 year. Kadri had to go also and we still needed a right shot D man. He got one of the better scoring D men in the league and Kerfoot to boot. Barrie has been just fine since Keefe took over. He's not a shutdown guy but he isn't as bad as some of you say. 23pts in 30 games and a +6 under Keefe. He had 8pts in 23games and a -10 under Babs. Over 82 games Barrie would be on pace for a career high in points.
Anyway back on track, this is his 2nd year in control. The top 4 guys are done, D/back up is next. Stuff takes time and if you don't believe that, just look around the league.

Funny thing, if the Leafs were in the west, they'd be 3rd in the Central and 2nd in the Pacific. The East is the beast this year. They're still on pace for around 97 points. Lots of hockey left.

Dubas chose to sign Tavares then he over paid his top three free agents.  This forced him to not Lose those guys but he had to throw in players and a first to do it.   Not sure how that's Lou's mistake.  Fact is this entire mess belongs to Dumas.
Really? Nylander is overpaid? Same argument could be made about Marner and Matthews now. They're getting what the market is. JT maybe overpaid but that's the way it goes via the UFA market.
Lou's mistake was giving Marleau 3 years and Zaitsev 7. Over 11 mill in salary for 2 players not doing much and to have Zaitsev for another 5?
Like CTB mentioned up above. " Basically all the information that we have shows that the team Kyle Dubas built, with the coach he wanted, playing the style of game he's always envisioned for us has absolutely been one of the best teams in the league this season."
I'm not concerned because he will address the D and any other area he sees fit.
Don't be bitter because Kadri got booted out of here. That was his own doing. He cost this team a chance to advance 2 years in a row.

Why would I be bitter.  Kadri might very well win a cup this year.  My point was that Dumas spent  roughly 40M on four players and put himself in cap hell not Lou.  You can spin it anyway you want but fact is, this entire mess is Dumas.  Now he's broke with no defence to speak of, no backup goalie and no first rounder.  But hey he does have four damn good forwards....

Leafs still have the 3rd best points percentage in the NHL since Keefe's hiring. If you want to point the finger at one individual for their current playoff predicament it's not Ceci, Hutch, or Dubas I'll tell you that much.

The Leafs have ONE defenseman who actually knows how to defend.  That's ALL Dubas.

Barrie led the team in ice-time with 27:10 tonight and went 27-13 in shot attempts... in case anyone was thinking of trading him.

The sooner the better!  Sell high, you know.

It's too bad he can't play defence. Trade him....

Hmm, teams are calling about Barrie...that's nice to know for down the road.

I'd be picking up that phone.  I didn't even think about how he has to be considering what this is doing to his UFA value.
So what to do first...fire Babcock and see if Keefe can right the ship? Or take the best offer on Barrie and bring up Sandin? Certainly looks to me like whatever message Babcock is preaching, isn't being received anymore.
When did Sandin become a good defensive defenseman?  I also don't see how Keefe can help. These guys just can't or won't play defense.

I would be surprised if they offer him a coaching job next summer.  Maybe the Marlies

We need defensemen who can handle big forwards.  Manson or Trouba for Nylander would be perfect.  Maybe add a second defensive dman at the deadline

Anyone know how many goals Nylander has scored without Matthews?
Last year when Matthews was out Nylander scored 3 goals in 20 games. I don't know the number when he was on another line tho.

Thanks.  With Matthews hurt I guess there's no urgency to sign him lol

Happy Nylander contract signing day guys.  I predict it gets done today, also, work has stopped blocking this site, I guess they took my threat to quit seriously.

Good to hear. I hope you issued them a sternly worded letter.

Nylander wasn't at practice today for what it's worth.  Maybe headed for TO??
