Haha...When I first saw this I said looks exactly how Gardiner would play it. No body position and reaching with his stick. Make all the excuses of what he was thinking or trying to do. Jake is a very soft offensive defenceman.

But that's not Jake in the clip?  :-\

Yeah none of the Leafs D ever do that amount of nothing even at their most ineffectual.
The comment should read "Awful Defense" not "Incredible Goal".
Ding ding ding...winner!!

Here's a 'better' defensieve defenseman:

Who was it that wanted Alzner on the Leafs last season?
I'm sure there were a bunch but not at what he got. I think everyone thought the habs overpaid for him.

I think the whole thing here is to get Kadri going. I'd put Marner with him and Marleau for a game or so to try and do that. Put JT with Kappy and Hyman and Matthews with Nylander and Johnsson.
For the D pairings...
Zaitsev Reilly
Hainsey/Oz Gardiner
Dermott Holl

"All in on making the playoffs" my god I love it.

Chiarelli is all in on saving his job.
Yup. He's gone if they miss. Has to be.

Nicholson said as much earlier this year.  I'm paraphrasing but he basically said if Oilers make the playoffs than Chiarelli stays on, which infers there's no guarantee he's back if they miss.
Can't see him back if they miss. They have the best player in the world and all those picks and are still crap. We Leaf fans are doing ok.

Babcock was mixing things up in the 3rd and Gardiner with Ozhiganov looked a lot better than with Zaitsev (of course it's not even a small sample size but still)  The Zaitsev problem will be with us until he either a) plays better or b) is off this roster.  Is Zaitsev even good enough to be a 3rd pair dman?  I'm not so sure, but at his contract, he can't be a 3rd pair guy so we're screwed.
Well he can if you have a Dermott type contract who can play up. Other then that, no. Like Jake, I think he's a decent defender but not good enough for this team to have a chance. And to be fair to Gardiner, he's been pretty bad lately, I think Babs should try both with other D men. Why not put him with Hainsey, Oz for a bit. Hell put Reilly on the right side. You never know. We do know that the chemistry just isn't there with 22 and 51 so Babs needs to stop beating that dead horse. It could change their games around. Maybe it's a Holl that works with Gardiner, who knows? I would be trying every combo and not for a shift or 2 to see what happens.

I don't think Holl has gotten a fair shot at all.   Try the Minnesota connection for a while and see if it's workable.
Totally agree with that. Why even have him here if you arent going to play him. Clearly though Babs needs to change it up to try and help Gardiner and Zaitsev as well as everyone else.

I know Jake is regarded a wonderful teammate, a great man in the room, highly skilled D-Man and I think he is a major talent, years ago in Tampa I watched him score two beauties and set up another goal in a 3-1 win. I said Wow, what do we have here?  Personally I think he would be a great winger but that aint going to happen.
We all know the problem with Jake is his constant bonehead gaffes when he is under pressure, his game last night, his problem handling the killer B's.   He is going to have to go contract wise, as someone is going to pay for the Good Jake TM when his contract is up. I think for the playoffs he is a real liability.

Rosen is getting great revues with the Marlies, maybe more defensively sound than Jake, can handle some offence as we have seen.  I think it's time for Jake to move on, throw in a Bracco, Engvall etc and a draft pick, perhaps we can pick up some good additional help.  Also Sandin appears to have the poise to make an early jump, perhaps not as early as next year but certainly the year after.
That's a nice post and I agree with it. If Rosen can make the jump now, then Jake has to go. While we're contenders, we certainly aren't favorites so I don't see Dubas blowing his wad this year. I'm still targeting Parayko because Pietrangelo would only be a rental.
As for Nylander. He isn't going anywhere unless someone is going to eat that signing bonus on July 1.
I think the Leafs will tinker with a mid pack D man and maybe a bottom 6 guy with a lil scoring touch. If Kadri, Marleau, Nylander don't get going, this team is in big trouble.

When Nylander signed we were all like "if really doesn't matter what he does now, it's all about what he's doing come April" so yeah, he needs to start scoring.  If Willy gets it going, that should also get Matthews going and you'll have that 1-2 combo with Matthews and Tavares lines as threats.  You would hope the Kadri line could get going at that point as other teams would focus all their defensive best players against the top 2 lines.
Totally agree. While Kappy and Johnsson are good players, they aren't Nylander and it is definitely hurting Matthews right now. He's still getting the chances but it isn't as consistent as it has been. I'm not concerned about Nylander. He will get it going and then we will see that 2, 1st lines attack. My concern is the 3rd line. Kadri is really really struggling and for the most part is getting the easiest match up. Said it earlier, he is a key for this team to have success in the playoffs.

The Gardiner goal was brutal.  As for the fans booing him, I guess they can do what they want but it seems many are fed up with his gaffes. I personally don't like it but he did kind of deserve it. That was an awesome display on how not to play D. Marner's giveaway to start the whole thing was brutal to.
