I was hoping Marchment would stick around a while longer. How about losing Gauthier? I fail to see what he brings to this team. Wouldn't mind seeing Korshkov get a call up too.

Yeah I can't understand how Gauthier has stuck around for so long.  Sure he can win some faceoffs,  but in his own end he is ineffective for the most part since he is not going to win many loose puck battles or skate the puck to safety.
You can say all you want about his skating being improved and yes when in motion, without obstacles his skating is adequate, but his stops starts and changes of direction are still way below average and he seems to fall down way too easily and too often.
I would be surprised if he is coveted by other teams, but if we could get a late round draft pick for him, I'd be happy.

It's not just the back to back, but 4 games in 6 nights I think was the real reason that they looked a little sluggish all night.

Main Leafs Hockey Talk / Re: Justin Holl signs 3-year extension

Holl getting 2m for 3yrs, makes me now wonder what Dermott is going to cash in at for next season.  I don't see any way that he takes less then Holl.  Dermott has a far more dynamic skill set and could potentially run a 2nd PP unit.

I don't like it.

$1-$1.2 X 2 was about what I was comfortable with, because I think he's a 3rd pairing guy when they get someone to properly play those minutes.

I think $2m for a 3rd pairing d-man is too much.

I'm with you on that assessment. Holl would be at best a 3rd pair D on a team that is built for a playoff run.  I would have thought 1.5m max, but this seems to be par for course of Dubas' contract negotiations thus far.  Lou probably would have got him signed for 900k average.

Maybe wait to have puck control before pulling goalie?

Special teams has been the achillies heel of this team so far this season.  The powerplay has been anything but dangerous....well it has often been dangerous for giving up scoring chances.  The players seem to be lost on the PP, and with the high end talent they have...they should be at least finding ways to throw a few shots toward the net you would think?

Why wasn't Johnsson one of the 3 shooters? Tavares does not strike me as a shoot out guy.

Such a lame goal song...

Their PP is so damn predictable. How about just one time a couple short passes instead of trying for a tap in.

I've been impressed with that Gaudet guy in his two games so far. Skates well for a big man and can handle the puck and seems to make smart plays.  Also adds a little sandpaper for a bottom 6 guy.

Harpur sucks

Not overly impressed with Ceci's game so far either. Hasn't been able to make a good pass yet....his play is not screaming top 4 dman so far.

Am I correct in thinking we would only have about 9 million in cap space for Marner for this season? (factoring in the Horton IR $)

Main Leafs Hockey Talk / Re: Zaitsev and Brown traded to Ottawa

Most of you are calling this a salary dump, but I never thought that Zaitsev at 4.5 is a gross overpay.  Mobile right shot dmen are hard to find and I really think Z's offensive skills were being suppressed in his role with leafs.  He will likely get some decent PP time with Sens and his 4.5 per could turn out to be a good contract for them.

They better get these contracts for Kappy and Johnson signed before rfa offer sheets come their way.
I know its a dick move, but If I'm a rival GM and want to put some additional cap pressure on Toronto, I would be offering Kapanen like 4 yrs at 4 to 4.2 million.  Losing a 2nd round pick to gain a 22 year old with breakaway speed coming off a 20 goal season would seem like a no brainer to a team with cap space....leafs would have to match and would end up spending another 1 million or so per year more then they were planning.
The deals are apparently at the finish line and the RFA market doesn't open until Wednesday.

Let's hope that means the ink is drying  :)
