It?s only game 2, guys. Sloppiness is to be expected.
It's against Ottawa.

There are no easy nights in the NHL.

Also, first road game, etc. Guys are rusty. They?ll get better (hopefully).
I like your optimism, your right we have to give these guys 10 games but I will say the Jumbo Joe first line thing is not working (and its not going to)
For some reason I missed Engvall, especially on the PP

2
That's a better PP without the old guy

Let's go!

Not sure who would round out the PK forwards with that lineup.   I know Marner, Hyman, Mikheyev and Kerfoot will be 4 of the 6 that they would typically roll.  Makes me think this is why Engvall makes lineup.

The Red wings got a steal drafting Viro in 3rd round.  He reminds me a lot of Anton Stralman with even more upside and speed. He skates as well as Drysdale.

I know you cant draw conclusions watching one tournament, but I dont see as bright a future for Hirvonen. He looks ok, but as an undersized playmaking winger you would want him to have a little more breakaway speed.

Alright, if he can score big goals like that, I'm ok with him;)

Abramov seems to be a lineup scratch this game?

Not sending Robertson to World Jrs is baffling.  He had the opportunity to return and represent his country against the best players in his age group.  He would have also seen 1st unit PP and probably PK duties.
You cannot convince me that him being at training camp is more important to his development and to the organization.  There is a strong chance that he isn't in the opening night lineup or doesnt even make the roster in which case this decision will look even more idiodoc.
He doesn't have much left to prove at the junior level. I think having a good camp absolutely does put him in a better position to succeed than playing in the juniors. There's also going to be injuries, he will play and better to get him used to playing with the Leafs than the juniors imo.
Maybe not much to prove playing a season of jr, but playing the best in world in his age group can only help him.  It's not like he is anywhere close to being Alexis Lafrieniere dominant.  I think this will be another case of overhyping a prospect that is far from a sure thing. He is going to have struggles finding a regular spot in lineup I believe.

Engvall is Marlies/trade bound. He's waiver exempt for 15 more NHL games and makes 1.25K so 175K will still count against the cap when he's sent down.

We have already lost 2 of our solid PK guys in Kapanen and Johnnson.  I dont see Engvall being sent down based on his effectiveness on PK alone.
As for Thornton and Speeza, I could see them playing somewhat of a platoon thru the season.  There will be some matchups where they will just need a speedier lineup and one will definitely sit.

I like this signing, was kind of hoping for it to happen but didn't expect it.
Pretty low risk for 1 year at 1 million.  This gives us a little more much needed size and reach for our backend depth guys.

In typical Dubas fashion, we overpay on another contract to put further strain on cap.  Don't get me wrong, Brodie is a good defencemen, but not a 5 million guy in todays current cap crunch market.  Shattenkirk, who possesses what I perceive to be a more sought after skillset by most teams, signed for 3.9 x 3 to go to a crap team.

I'm not sure there's a team in the league that would take Shattenkirk over Brodie right now.
Shattenkirk is basically Barrie. Why would we do that again?

Yeah by no means was I saying I would want Shattenkirk over Brodie based on the makeup of this defence, just saying the number seems high.

Can you describe that skill set and what makes it more sought after than what Brodie's?

A little more dangerous offensively, can QB a powerplay.

Hyman probably won't be signed until after the expansion draft. He'll be a UFA and won't need to be protected. I seriously doubt the Leafs would protect Clifford if he is still on the team. As others have said, Engvall is not exempt if he plays 18 games next season.

Yeah forget that Clifford thought. Had a brain fart and momentarily thought you could protect 9 forwards and 3 d.
