Frederik Andersen in last 4 starts: 3-1-0, .954 sv % and 1.77 GAA. #Leafs

I hope we can put to rest the questions about his ability and try to cheer him on.  Yes it's still early but I believe it's different than in the past.

I'm surprised he did this.  He normally doesn't hit people like this.  I wonder if someone did something to him prior

I want to see them sign onw of shattenkirk or burns this offseason.

Shattenkirk's somebody that I'm leaning a little more towards. Really depends on how reasonable/unreasonable his contract demands are.

the leafs have michalek, laich, greening, robidas, polak, hunwick.

plus any rfas that won't be resigned like cowen if hes not bought out and maybe holland.

thats like 20+million coming off the books this year.

with JVR, Bozak, komarov, lupul, gleason's buyout plus other bubble guys like leivo and marincin you have potentially another 20ish million coming off the books the following offseason.

thats pretty good and I think they can afford to offer one of burns or shattenkirk a pretty good deal this offseason and still have lots of room for tavares next year 8)

We have to be careful about high priced FAs.  Matthews, Nylander, and Marner will all command a lot when they are off their ELC.

It's a new era!  It's exciting!

Ouch. And, the thing is, Matthews and Nylander are generating a lot of quality chances. As long as the Leafs have Bozak cluttering up the Cs, makes sense to let Matthews and Nylander develop together, split face offs, etc. So, I'm all for them sticking together -- but, if Hyman doesn't have the skills or instincts to be developed into their defensively responsible 3rd (and I haven't seen much to indicate he can), why not give someone else a shot? Griffith, Holland, Brown, Leivo all seem options worth trying out.

Griffith and Brown are RW and I doubt they'd be comfortable on their off wing.  So unless you move Nylander over to the Left side, that won't work out very well.  Holland can certainly slot in there, and Leivo is a left winger but I'm not sure about him keeping up speed wise.  Both of those guys will definitely help them pot more goals, but I'm not sure they'd make their tire-fire defensive zone coverage any better (likely worse).

Thought Soshnikov was a LW, so he and Holland could work, and that Nylander can play all forward positions, which would free up space for Griffith and Brown. I haven't seen much to suggest Hyman is particularly great on defense, certainly nothing to suggest he's so good that all the broken plays ought to be tolerated.

I think moving Nylander over to LW is probably the easiest transition.  Considering both Marner and Brown have shown pretty decent defensive chops, I'd like to see:

Nylander - Matthews - Brown
Komarov - Kadri - Marner  (still the "matchup" line)
JvR - Bozak - Soshnikov/Griffith
Martin - Smith - Hyman

Why would you mess up Nylander/Matthews when it's clicking just to add another guy to their line?  Leave Nylander where he is and have Brown make the adjustment if you even put Brown there.  Personally, I'd like to see Soshnikov there.  That would be a rocking line.  Basically a higher skill version of Hyman.

I hope our time is next.  Although, you have to feel bad for the Indians too not having won since 1948 which is much worse than the Leafs

1.  He played center at the 2015 WJC (that video is almost 2 years old now).  Alex Holmstrom was his Left Winger for most of the tournament (#25)

2.  Playing the Left point on the Power Play (a good portion of the video) does not count.

3.  When I see him handling pinching NHL defensemen on his weak side and making the same breakout passes he's being doing from RW or at least not getting hemmed in, he'll have proven he can play LW in the NHL.

I've already suggested they try him there too.  Preaching to the choir to some degree.  At this point, anything to get Hyman off that line would be good.

There probably aren't highlight videos of Nylander's defence for obvious reasons.

All I can tell you, probably more McGarnagle, is he's played 2 pro seasons on the LW before (putting up great numbers), and they always eventually shifted him to centre anyway (putting up unprecedented numbers).

Thus, Nylander can play all three forward positions, and he's best at centre.

Sosh with Matthews - Nylander opens up some easier passing plays across the crease and from behind the net. Sosh tends to prefer the RW though (he's a shooter).

I agree.  I think if Hyman swaps with Sosh then that will be an explosive line.  It weakens the 4th line and maybe doesn't get Martin going as much but it would be a great scoring line.  I wouldn't even mind seeing Sosh with Kadri and Brown.

AHL Player of the Month Dude

Back on topic, Sosh looked very good last night.  The one shift actual got the crowd going.

how about Shos-Nylander-Leipsec

Leipsec has not shown me enough to warrant being on the Leafs roster right now.

The @MapleLeafs have assigned forward Josh Leivo to the @TorontoMarlies on a long-term injury conditioning loan. #TMLtalk

I swear they're just making this stuff up as they go.

:D :D The next lockout will be the Leafs fault.

I didn't know if you could do a long term injury conditioning loan.  Thought they were only like 15 days or something

To keep the theme going.  A thread just on Nikita.

Yes!  Hopefully he plays tonight.  Love what he adds to the Leafs.

Main Leafs Hockey Talk / Re: Mitch Marner

The Leafs got really lucky with Mitch Marner.  It looks like Arizona picked the wrong guy.  Marner, Nylander, and Matthews are all incredible.  The Leafs have drafted incredibly well and those three guys are going to give the team an amazing core going forward.

Word is Mark Hunter fought hard for it as Babs wanted a defenceman at 4 in that draft. Things got a little heated on the floor. LL mediated and in the end let Mark do his job. Good decision by Lou.

The League is now about fast and skill, fast and skill. Size optional. Hunter knew it and we're reaping the results!

The most interesting fact about that story is that LL had to do that from the Devils table, since he was still with NJ at the time Marner was drafted.  Amazing really.

LOL.  I love how people tell stories as if it were fact.

For what it's worth through these first few games with Martin in the lineup I really haven't seen a significant difference in the way opposing teams "go after" someone like Marner and Matthews then, say, what went on with Nylander last year.

Yeah but Nylander came up when the Leafs were already out of the playoffs.  The other team probably didn't care so much

He went after Petrovic.  He doesn't have to fight but as long as he puts it into the opposing team's head not to mess with our star guys, that's enough.  It's not always what you do.  Also, he goes out and bangs people a lot.

But, Petrovic DID got after one of our star guys.

He didn't do that after Martin gave him notice.  That's what I was saying.  My point is, you think it's bad now?  Wait till you remove Martin out of the lineup.  The other team looks over and sees no protection for the Leafs and it will be open season on Marner, Nylander, and Matthews.

we need Martin's physicality in the lineup to do just what he did last night for Marner.

What did he actually do though?

He went after Petrovic.  He doesn't have to fight but as long as he puts it into the opposing team's head not to mess with our star guys, that's enough.  It's not always what you do.  Also, he goes out and bangs people a lot.
