Main Leafs Hockey Talk / Re: Phaneuf To Sens

He's averaging more ice time in Ottawa than he was here this season, just over 2 more minutes per game.

Has 6 points in 8 games so far.

It's like the Rask trade all over again.

I suddenly and inexplicably want a hamburger.

Funny. I bet there's a funny story about how you chose your profile name?

Phaneuf is a good NHL defenseman.

Nik, as a hockey fan, do you enjoy watching Phaneuf play?

I do.

I do, too (when he plays well).

I don't when he doesn't (the Leafs being lousy adds to the dislike).

From the MOTM Season Wrap-up:

Top 5 in various categories....

POINTS
Bernier 28.5
Kessel 27
Kadri 24
Reimer 23
Rielly 18

NO. ACCOLADES
Bernier 19
Reimer 16
Kadri 15
Kessel 14
Booth 9 (!)

TIMES VOTED:
Bernier 30
Kadri 29
Kessel 21
Santorelli 21
Reimer 20

Dion's on his fourth coach in the last three years and he's not even in the conversation when it comes to who's the best player on a really lousy team.

No one's going to trade for a player who has those kind of questions about his commitment and leadership style.

It's hard to imagine any trade for Phaneuf right now. He got run out of town in Calgary, he's practically being burned in effigy in Toronto. How does any GM justify to his team's fans acquiring a player with that kind of baggage.

1. I think you're exaggerating the extent to which Phaneuf is taking heat right now. I think Kessel is taking way more of the brunt of the blame for the collapse of the team. Phaneuf being hurt for a large part of the team going off the rails probably helped in that respect. Most people are probably ready to move on but the idea that  there's a lot of anger towards Phaneuf? I don't see it.

2. Even if you were right about Phaneuf I think you're wildly overrating the reach and influence of Toronto fan/media opinion when it comes to the opinion of fans around the league. I really don't think the GM in Columbus and Dallas would look at a trade for Phaneuf and think "How am I going to explain this to my fanbase when they're so keyed into what Toronto people think about Phaneuf's game?". Most people outside of Toronto think Toronto fans/media are unrealistically and hyper-critical. Most teams will look at Phaneuf solely from a perspective of "can he help the team" and for the right deal, he probably can.

I don't think there is a "right deal" without an egregious amount of sweetening from the Leafs. Dion's very expensive, very long term contract has to be problematic because, at least to my eyes, he sure looks like he's lost a step and he's 29. Dion's a project now and I have a hard time believing he's not on the downside of his career.

Anyway, all I was trying to say is I think he'll be back next year and I'm trying to make peace with that because I don't especially enjoy watching him play.

I expect Dion will be back with the Leafs next year and I'm unhappy about that but he's got a proven track record for leading our team to a top 5 draft pick so I guess that'll be okay.

Does Ottawa even have cap space for a new deal with Alfie?

Phaneuf was a marquee player.

He was a player having a bad year, not getting along with his teammates and who was pretty widely regarded as being one of the more overrated in the game. Who already had a very expensive contract(relative to the cap in terms of percentage, he's probably cheaper now).

The Brian Burke "Look at this awesome player I got for scraps" narrative of the trade doesn't even really fit your own internal logic because, as you put it, the awesome player they traded for has achieved "nothing of merit" in his time here.

1. Somebody said we could get a 5th overall for Phaneuf.
2. I said Nonis wouldn't even be offered what Calgary got for him in 2010.
3. Busta and Tigger said no, in fact, he was actually worth a lot more, both then as well as now, and the only reason Calgary undersold was because Brian Burke was the only GM they let know that Phaneuf was available. Just him.
4. Gee, I said, Really? That seems like an awfully strange way to go about dealing such a big name player and when I looked it up I found stuff like this:
http://espn.go.com/nhl/blog/_/name/lebrun_pierre/id/4808038/nhl-calgary-flames-gm-denies-dion-phaneuf-trade-block

So you see, Nik? Its those two (Busta and Tigger) who are clearly insane, not me.

You can't be serious. Do you honestly believe the Flames were only going to listen to an offer from Brian Burke? They'd have shopped him everywhere and what they got in return is more than Nonis will ever be offered now for a player who has aged, achieved nothing of merit and is signed to a deal that has long term regret written all over it.

Like busta says, it's really not hard to fathom that the Flames didn't really shop around. I think Nonis could do quite well in a trade given the dearth of top pairing defencemen available and that contract is likely going to look just fine over time.

I think you and Busta are right out to lunch. Phaneuf was a marquee player. Why wouldn't the Flames explore every option? Too busy? Just didn't feel like it? You don't think their Board of Directors would've expected due diligence on a deal of that scope?

Maybe it's just me, though. Maybe Phaneuf's value has somehow grown for reasons I can't figure out.

Could you propose a trade scenario that would see Nonis doing "quite well"?

When Calgary traded Phaneuf in 2010, the best they were offered was that steaming heap of dung they ended up getting from the Leafs. If no one was offering a fifth overall then, why the heck would he be worth the fifth overall now?

When Calgary traded Phaneuf in 2010, we don't know whether or not they got into serious negotiations with anyone else. We know Burke had approached them earlier in the season about him, and that they approached Burke about him later on.Also, just because Calgary's management team at the time was willing to move him for what some consider to be a less than spectacular package doesn't mean anything about what he's worth now - and, that package wasn't as bad as it's made out to be, either. There were a pair of 2nd line forwards and a 2nd pairing defenceman that went to Calgary in that deal.

TSN is saying Garth Snow is willing to trade their 5th overall draft choice, and looking for defensive help...Hello Dion...You want to play in the Barkley center....How about giving them Phanuef for their 5th and one of their prospects....(SOLD)

How do you market Phaneuf in a trade discussion? It's a tough pitch to say he's going to provide leadership and defensive stability to a young team and he's not exactly a fan favorite so it's not like he's going to help you sell a lot of jerseys or anything. So then you're stuck trying to convince a rival GM that Dion's worth $7M a year to be part of his supporting cast but even then how happy is he going to be as a #3-4?

I hope I'm completely wrong as usual but I don't think Phaneuf's going anywhere for a long, long time.

They're not perfect comparables, but someone like Brian Campbell was dealt with a $7.1 million cap hit in 2011 when the cap was $64.3 million (had less years remaining, but was older too).  Next season the cap will be $69-70 million, and will keep rising.  There will probably always be some team who would be willing to take his deal, as he can still provide offensive production from the back-end.

But it's hard to say for sure until it happens or doesn't, of course.

Like you said, it's not a perfect comparison but at least Campbell had won a Cup with Chicago the year before he was traded whereas after ten years in the league, Dion's never played on a team that even made it to the 2nd round.

"They love Jonathan Bernier, the goaltender, but they would love him more if he played more games. They love the first line of Phil Kessel, Tyler Bozak and James van Riemsdyk, which gave fits to opposition coaches. They love the development of the young defenders, Morgan Rielly and Jake Gardiner. That’s about where the love ends for now."

They don't love Phaneuf? Didn't Nonis just sign him for 7x$7M?
